"I found myself without desires
  and without knowledge.

There was nothing left but love,
 the state of witness was left behind;
there was only love, all pervading,
 all embracing, absolute.

 There were no crucial experiences,
 no soul-shattering visions.
I just ceased imagining myself to
be what I never was and there was
nothing to replace the unreal with.

There was no need to look for
 replacements - the nothingness
 was the fullness of understanding,
 love and silent peace."

I say to people,
"Sit quietly and watch where the mind goes." If you observe it you will see that it is always running off to enjoy or suffer experiences that belong to the past.

So, whenever you catch it doing this, bring it back to the present moment.
In this present moment there are no dialogues going on. In this present moment there is nothing to control or repress.

The mind is just like a thief. It is stealing your happiness by making you run after things and ideas that make you suffer all the time.
Bring it back to the present each and every time you find that it is wandering somewhere else. This thief in your head loots your property, your happiness, every waking moment. And you allow him. You make friends with him and let him do what he wants.

Why should you fondle and be friends with a snake that is going to bite you and make you suffer?
Show the mind the way home and don't let it make you suffer all the time.

"Everything in this world is transitory. So also worldly happiness: it comes and the next moment it is gone. If permanent, abiding happiness is to be found, that which is Eternal will have to be realized. . . The ability to dwell in his true nature, in his own Self, in his own state of Being, is potentially inherent in man. The veil of ignorance is there, yet there is also a door to knowledge. By passing through that door of knowledge man returns to his own true nature, becomes established in his own state of Being. . .
Desires and cravings make up the contents of your subtle body. Just as the scent of a flower goes and comes, such are your births and deaths. Again, from another angle of vision, there is no birth or death at all. When the physical body is dead, that subtle body with those desires and cravings floats about shelterless, and then man is born again according to his Karma. The ego or 'I-ness' which is studded with desires comes and goes, while for the Atma (Self/Soul) there is no question of coming and going. Man has a gross, a subtle and a causal body: the root-cause of the same is the Atma. Until this is realized there is birth and death. The Atma is Self-effulgent. Coming and going exist only for the individual. In order to realize your Self, you have just to remove the curtain."

THAT WHICH IS

Q: There is the witnessed consciousness and there is the witnessing consciousness. Is the second the supreme?

M: There are the two -- the person and the witness, the observer. When you see them as one, and go beyond, you are in the supreme state. It is not perceivable, because it is what makes perception possible. It is beyond being and not being. It is neither the mirror nor the image in the mirror. It is what is -- the timeless reality, unbelievably hard and solid.

Q: The jnani -- is he the witness or the Supreme?

M: He is the Supreme, of course, but he can also be viewed as the universal witness.

Q: But he remains a person?
M: When you believe yourself to be a person, you see persons everywhere. In reality there are no persons, only threads of memories and habits. At the moment of realisation the person ceases.

Identity remains, but identity is not a person, it is inherent in the Reality itself. The person has no being in itself; it is a reflection in the mind of the witness, the 'I am', which again is a mode of being.

When I say
“All is well, and everything is unfolding as it should,"
most of you begin to think about your
personal problems or the collective problems of the world. This is exactly what you should not do. As we go through
the vicissitudes of life we pass through much friction. This is normal.

There is absolutely nothing wrong. Most of us have been brought up to believe that certain things are right and  certain things are wrong. This may appear true in the relative world, but in the spiritual world all is well, and  everything is unfolding as it should.

Whatever you believe is wrong with your life or the world is nothing but an unfoldment in consciousness. It is  necessary for your evolution. If you understand this you will not react to whatever happens. You will simply smile,  observe, and become the witness of each situation that comes into your life as you unfold.

There is nothing in the  universe that can hurt you. The substratum of the universe is divine love, pure consciousness. It does not know the  meaning of hurt or evil or sin. Those are words humans make up.

When you begin to identify with your real nature, which is love, then you sail through all the so called calamities of  life. If you identify with the world of appearances you seem to suffer. You become angry and upset, and you become  disillusioned because the world is not turning your way. Things are not unfolding the way you think they should,  according to your concepts and preconceived ideas. There is nothing wrong. Everything is right the way it is.
As you  begin to understand this you find peace.

What do you really want out of life?
As most of you know, when you achieve your goals it does not turn out as you
hoped it would. As long as you look for something you will be disappointed. When wisdom begins to come to you,  you stop searching. You stop needing and wanting. You live in the moment, spontaneously. Then everything unfolds  the way it is supposed to.

Take a look at your life, at all the times you interfered with a condition because you believed it wasn't right, and you  caused problems for yourself and for all concerned. Everything will always work out. There are no mistakes. You have to feel this. You have to have faith in yourself and in the powers that be.

While working in the world, do not react to things. You are only seeing a partial story. It is like the example of the key hole I gave you. A person looks through a keyhole and sees one part of the picture. They see someone stabbing  someone else with a knife. It is horrible. But then they open the door, and they see the whole picture. They will  probably see that in a previous life the man who was being stabbed, stabbed the person who was now stabbing him.
In this life the same thing is happening to him. When the observer looks further he will see the one being stabbed,  and the one doing the stabbing, both laughing. For nothing has happened to them at all in reality.

You see, we never have the complete picture, it is always partial. This is why I say to not react. Whenever a  situation confronts you, act from the viewpoint of wisdom by not reacting. Your body will do something. When I  say “Do not react," I mean mentally. If you do not react mentally, and you are at peace with yourself, your body will  take the right course of action in order to transcend that situation, and you will not have to go through it again.
If you react, and you seem to get your way and win in the situation, you have done nothing more than put your  karma in abeyance for a while. The results have not hit you yet, you stopped them for a while. But according to the  law of karma you will go through it all at one time or another.
If you do not react mentally, divine right action will  take place and you will transcend that experience. This is the way to live in the world.

Everything that appears will one day disappear.

There is no permanence in the world of forms.

But that unchangeable consciousness in which all forms appear can never be diminished,
destroyed or altered in any way.
If you learn to be that consciousness you come to understand that nothing can touch or destroy you. …

Ignorance causes us to worry about the possible destruction of the body.

If you make your well-being dependent on the well-being of the body,
you will always be worrying and suffering.

When you know, from direct experience, that you are the Self,
you realize that there is no birth and death.
You realize that you are deathless and immortal.

Self-realization is sometimes called the immortal state because it never ends and because it is never destroyed or even altered.

If you keep your attention on the Self you can attain this immortality.
If you attain it,
in that ultimate state of being you will find that there is no birth, no death, no desires, no fears, no worries, no mind and no world.

Question: How to stop thinking?

Papaji: By Being! (giggles) When you think that you are an object, a person, a body, or some other idea, but by Being there is nothing! Just Being. And Being is already there. You are always Being. To become something you must meditate and perform some mantra, ritual, practice. Just to Be is simple. Without Being you can't do any practice.

So don't think of anything else. Just Be!
It is so easy to Be.

Question: But when I try to just be, so much thinking happens. I am sure everyone has this problem.

Papaji: Thinking happens when you want to become something. Then you must think. But to not become something what is there to do? Stay as you are! Be as you are in whatever circumstances, just always Be, It doesn't need any practice. Whatever you get by practice you will lose, but Being will never be lost because you will not get it by any experience or practice. It simply is, Simply Be.

Don't stir your mind in Being, don't think and don't make effort. I will tell you how to be Being itself. No effort, no thinking. Avoid thinking and avoid not thinking. What is between these two?

It is by the grace of God that you come to desire to know yourself. This desire to know yourself is itself a clear sign of the Atman’s grace. So, there is grace already working as the source of your effort.
Grace is not an external quality of the Self but its very nature. It abides in your Heart, pulling you inward into itself. The only task you must do is turn your attention inward and search the source of ‘I’. This is the only personal effort we have to put in.

Sri Ramana Maharshi

D.: If one is to withdraw oneself, why is there the world?

M.: Where is the world and where does one go withdrawing oneself?
Does one fly in an aeroplane beyond space? Is it withdrawal?
The fact is this: the world is only an idea. What do you say: Are you within the world or is the world within you?

D.: I am in the world. I am part of it.

M.: That is the mistake. If the world were to exist apart from you, does  it come and tell you that it exists?
No, you see it exists. You see it  when you are awake and not when asleep.
If it exists apart from you,  it must tell you so and you must be aware of it even in your sleep.

D.: I became aware of it in my jagrat.

M.: Do you become aware of yourself and then of the world?
Or do  you become aware of the world and then of yourself?
Or do you  become aware of both simultaneously?

D.: I must say simultaneously.

M.: Were you or were you not, before becoming aware of yourself?
Do  you admit your continued existence before and when you become  aware of the world?

D.: Yes.

M.: If always existing yourself, why are you not aware of the world  in sleep if it exists apart from the Self?

D.: I become aware of myself and of the world also.

M.: So you become aware of yourself. Who becomes aware of whom?
Are there two selves?

D.: No.

M.: So you see that it is wrong to suppose that awareness has passing phases. The Self is always aware. When the Self identifies itself as  the seer it sees objects. The creation of the subject and the object is  the creation of the world.

Subjects and objects are creations in Pure
Consciousness. You see pictures moving on the screen in a cinema  show. When you are intent on the pictures you are not aware of the  screen. But the pictures cannot be seen without the screen behind.
The world stands for the pictures and Consciousness stands for  the screen.
The Consciousness is pure.
It is the same as the Self  which is eternal and unchanging.

Get rid of the subject and object
and Pure Consciousness will alone remain.

You have to keep going. Hurdles will appear and must be overcome. One should overcome the problems.

A problem is a thought. From your childhood, you have accumulated many thoughts. Who has given you all those thoughts? Your father, your mother, your friends in your circle. Everything has come to you. They are all ignorant people, so what can they give you? What can darkness give to light? Tell me. Nothing, isn't it? What can you find in darkness? Nothing! All thoughts, all habits are not true. All have come to you due to ignorance.

Go to the source from where they arise and they dissolve. All bondage is only a mental bondage which you have borrowed from someone else. Money that is borrowed is not yours. In the same way, you have borrowed the thoughts of others and have taken them as your own bondage. How can it be? Throw off that bondage! Who stops you? Give the money to the creditor, and you are free of all debt! You have to be free of debt.

Ignorance is taking the world and its objects to be real. The world never tells you, "I'm real", and no object ever tells you, "I belong to you." It is you who takes all this to be true, yet it is all only a fleeting illusion. Those who still have love for the illusion do not know who they are. When you reject everything, you will know "I am Reality."

When Will I Awaken?

Many people still ask me, "Robert will I be enlightened in this life or do I have to go through many lives?
Will I awaken in this life?
Will I become free in this life or do I have to go on playing games like everybody else, making believe, when will I awaken?"
And it's very funny to me.
My answer is never!
You'll never awaken!

It's like the water in the mirage asking,
"When will I become real water?
How long do I have to be a mirage?
When will I become the real water?"
Of course it will never become the real water.
For the mirage can never become anything but a mirage.
It will always be a mirage.
So it is with us.
What you are can never be anything else.
For you do not exist as a body at all.
And if you do not exist as a body what can become self-realized?
In other words you have nothing to become self-realized with.
You cannot become self-realized it's impossible.
Forget about it.
Don't even think of it.

Self-realization has absolutely nothing to do with your body or your thoughts or your mind or your practices or your sadhanas or anything else.
Self-realization is the ultimate reality.
It is the pure awareness, the nirvana and that doesn't exist either.
So what exists?
There is no answer.
For what exists can never be known with a finite mind.
This is why we do the work from where we are.
We do not think about becoming self-realized or becoming liberated.
We simply wonder who we are.
We just ask ourselves, "Where does this body come from?
What appears to be a body?"
And we compare it to the water in the mirage.
It's an hallucination.
It has no validity.
In other words you have no existence whatsoever.

You have never had an existence.
Nothing exists.
Yet we appear to exist.
So what to do?
Nothing, there is nothing you can do about it.
That's just the way it is.
Do not try to change it.
Stay the way you are and keep still.
That is the best thing you can do.
Be happy just the way you are.
Of course the only way you can be happy is by keeping still and not reacting to things, by leaving everything alone and being yourself.
When I say, "Being yourself", I mean being you the way you are right now, nothing else.
The world of reality exists by itself.
It just is.

There is nothing you can do to change anything.
Do not try to change anything.
Do not work on yourself.
For every time you're working on yourself you are emphasizing that you're the self, the mortal self that needs to be worked at.
"just be yourself" the way you are right now, in this moment.
I'm not saying to be your self last week or to be your self a week from now.
Be yourself right this moment, this second, this instant and you'll be safe.
Do not concern yourself how to be the self.
Do not concern yourself what you have to do to be the self.
Don't even wonder what it is to be the self.
Just be!

Do not question it.
Do not try to understand it.
You will always be the way you are, nothing will can ever change that.
So you might as well get on with that and be happy.
Suffering comes when you try to change yourself.
Suffering ensues when you try to develop moksha, liberation.
When you try to transcend yourself, then you suffer.
For you are trying to attain something that doesn't exist and it hurts.

Isn't it wonderful not to do anything.
Never try to attain a thing or become anything else.
What about pain, what about lack and limitation, what about poverty.
What about the rest of these things that exist?
It's all part of life.
Do not try to get rid of it.
Look at it, accept it, be happy with it and leave it alone.

What I'm really saying is, "Get your mind off yourself".
Stop thinking about yourself.
Stop thinking about anybody else.
Whatever is supposed to come to you will come to you.
Whatever you are supposed to have you will have.
Wherever you have to go you will go.
You have absolutely nothing to do with it.
So why not enjoy where you are right this moment.
Stop trying to change things.
The very trying makes them worse.
The body that you're wearing right now is an hallucination.
You are not that person whatsoever.
But because you appear as that person you go through many experiences of what that person has to go through.
Do not fight it.
Do not try to change it.
Leave everything alone.
You'll be very surprised at what happens if you leave everything alone.
But when you try to change bad for good you're fighting a losing battle for it cannot be done.

You may tell me of people who have used their mind to achieve things in the world, to heal themselves of disease, to heal themselves of lack or limitation, to become powerful beings through thinking.
Those things are only changes, temporary changes.
Do not try to be a human being.
Go beyond that.
You go beyond that by doing nothing.
Yet some of you do not understand and think you have to sit down like a lump and do nothing on the contrary.
When you're doing nothing you're doing something.
Something is being done.
Something will always be done by you.
Yet at the same time nothing is being done.
So the question is, "Is something being done or is nothing being done?" and there is no answer.
What do you want to achieve and why do you wish to achieve those things?
Only for your self aggrandizement.
An animal leads a normal life.
It cannot think like we do.
It goes through its life and when it's time to leave their life it leaves it peacefully, happily.
But as human beings we fight, trying to live forever.
Trying to maintain the same beauty we've always had, the same happiness, the same joy.
This is all a waste of energy.

All is well, just the way it is.
You are perfect just the way you are.
There is nothing that you have to do.
There is no-one you have to please.
There is no God that you have to appease.
You are the one.
All of these ideas that are going through your mind of people, places, things, Gods, are all you.
You are creating everything.
Everything that you can think about you're creating.
Everything comes out of yourself.
Just like you're dreaming.
The mistake we make is we try to awaken from the dream, the mortal dream, from this dream.
Yet who is to awaken from it?
The person that wants to awaken doesn't exist.
Do you see what I'm saying?
Nothing exists that has to do anything.
The person who wants to be free does not exist, has never existed.
The person who is looking for moksha does not exist.
Then again what does exist?
Total silence exists.
Pure profound silence.
Never try to comprehend these things.
For you're using the mind, you're using the cells that are the mind, that are connected to the cells of the universe and you make your life miserable by doing this.

There is no difference between you and a tree or a mountain, a sky or the ocean.
The whole universe is composed of hydrogen atoms.
So you're nothing but a hydrogen atom.
How does it feel to be a hydrogen atom?
See how you mind begins to think?
It's difficult for most of you to stay silent.
You are not required to understand a thing I say.
I speak utter nonsense.
It's all nonsense and some of you are taking it in so profoundly like it's important.

Who are you really?
I have no idea?
If you have an idea of who you are you've got a problem.
For you're not that at all.
Again we go back to the beginning when I opened up this sentence.
Who thinks they're something.
You can never be anything.
The 'you' that you think you are can never be a thing.
Always remember this.
The 'you' can never become anything.
The only freedom you really have is to be still and quiet and that is the only freedom you've got.
To be totally quiet.
Everything else is an hallucination, a lie.
So most of you want me to sit here and tell you lies.
Stop worrying.
Stop fretting.
Stop believing something can happen to you, to hurt you.
What you are was never born.
It knows nothing of birth.
The one that knows about birth and death doesn't exist.

So here we are together again.
Why do you come here?
If you have a reason for coming here it's the wrong reason.
There is no reason for doing anything at all.
(long silence)

When Will I Awaken?

Examine daily what kind of thoughts you project. Are they about spiritual life or are they about worldly life? One who examines in this way, gains an inner richness. For one whose attention is turned towards the Reality, the first effect is desirelessness.

.

What does it mean to you if some other aspirant behaves in a certain way? What do you lose if he goes astray? We must free ourselves from the concept of "you." Otherwise, that also becomes a bondage, a source of worry. Therefore, you should not worry about anybody. Only then are you free.

"Master of Self-Realization - An Ultimate Understanding" by Sri Siddharameshwar

12

In the hall where Bhagavan used to give darshan there was a chimney. The chimney was closed on all sides with steel mesh, except at the bottom. One day, a beautiful small bird somehow entered it and became trapped inside this chimney. The bird found itself trapped in conditions diametrically opposed to its natural environment: the vast space where it could fly freely. From the moment it entered the chimney, it was frantically struggling to escape, but all its efforts proved futile. Why? Because, forgetting the way it came, it was repeatedly trying to escape through all the closed routes. Sri Bhagavan took this opportunity to reveal a great truth:

'This bird has given up the all-pervasive space, its natural place of residence. It has been caught in this limited space, which is opposed to its nature. Not knowing how to escape from this prison, it is agitated and afraid. Like this bird, jivas have also given up their natural place of residence, the vast space of consciousness. Through the delusion of ignorance they have become trapped in the prison of the body. Without knowing how to escape, they are tormented by various afflictions. The ceaseless efforts of this bird to reach its natural place of residence are unsuccessful because they are directed upwards, the way of bondage, instead of downwards, the way it came. Similarly, the reason why the jiva’s ceaseless effort to attain freedom are unsuccessful is because they too are directed outwards, the way of bondage, instead inwards, the way they came. The natural tendency of the bird to go upwards asserts itself even in its attempt for freedom. Likewise, the natural tendency of jivas to roam outwards asserts itself even in their attempts at liberation. This is the jiva’s natural tendency. If, through true discrimination and awareness, the jiva is made to turn back from outward-directed sight to inward sight, and if it remains fixed there, it is certain that it would attain liberation in an instant.'

" Love Grows in Deep Intimacy & Trust " ~ O S H O : -

Q. [A sannyasin says that she was in a deep loving relationship with her husband, but at the same time she felt attracted to someone else.]

OSHO :- " Two Things to Remember. The First: 'Love Grows Only in Deep Intimacy and Trust'. 'If You Change Persons', 'From A to B', 'From B to C', 'It is as If You are Transplanting Your Being' 'From One Place to Another'. 'You Will Never Grow Roots'. 'And the Tree will Grow Fragile and Weak'. 'To Gain Strength', 'Deep Roots are Needed'; 'And to Gain Roots', 'Time is Needed'. 'And For Love Even Eternity is Not Enough'. 'Even Eternity is Not Enough', 'Remember', 'Because Love Can Grow and Grow and Grow' -- and 'There is No End to It'. 'There is a Beginning', 'But There is No End'.

So don't take love as a superficial thing. It is not just a relationship. Through love, your whole being has to be discovered. It is sacred, but in the West it has become very profane; it has almost lost the meaning. It has become more and more sexual and bodily, very superficial and casual. In fact I am afraid that the West may lose the very dimension of love. People may completely forget that there was a possibility of inner endless growth in it.

If it is a question of excitement, then it is good to change partners. Then you are more excited and your partner is something to discover. With an old partner everything is known and settled; the whole territory is known. One starts feeling a little fed up, a little bored. This is natural. But if you love the person, you love even the boredom. If you love the person, you also love even his old habits, the old ways, the old territory. Old things have a charm of their own. Just the old armchair you sit on -- it has something that no other chair can give, it fits perfectly. Not only that you know it, it also knows you.

There is a familiarity in the old room in which you have lived, the old house. There is a certain affinity, a certain tuning, so that by and by you are not two separate things. You have melted into each other and have become one, and the boundaries have become blurred. With new things, boundaries are very shy and the separation is very clear. Old things have their charm, but one has to discover it.

Only children are interested in new things. The more grown up you are, the more interested you are in the old things, and the less one is bored. Then you go on finding that these are just levels, layers; that when you love a person one layer has been known -- but don't conclude that that is all. A deeper layer is waiting to be provoked and challenged -- and there is no end to it. In fact the person himself is not aware how many layers of being he has. If a lover challenges his being, not only the lover will know, the person himself will come to know his being -- and only through love. We come to know each other when we challenge each other, and go on provoking each other.

So try to find out the new with the old person -- and you will never be at a loss. Once you know the key of how to always discover a new layer, then the old person is never old. Or, he is old and yet new. Then you are not bored or fed up. Then by and by roots grow.

A point comes in deep love where the lover and the beloved almost become one. I say almost, because the bodies remain separate; but they come to feel a harmony. Now even new research shows that if two persons have loved each other very long, they need not say anything to each other. If a thought arises in one person, it is immediately transferred to the other. Old lovers don't say much but they understand. By and by lovers become twins.

So love is a great adventure, it is not a casual thing. It is a life commitment -- and if you can understand, it is a commitment for lives, not only for one life.

Because of Christianity and Judaism and Mohammedanism -- and these three religions have become very important in the West -- the concept of rebirth has been lost. But if you love a person very deeply in this life, you will find him in the next life again. There are recorded phenomena about the same couple being born again and again for many lives, going on discovering each other.

So let love be your meditation. Make it a sacred thing, not a casual phenomenon. Let it be a challenge. Each challenge is painful because each growth is painful. So for six months you have to make love your meditation. Forget that anybody else exists except your lover. And see what happens in these six months.

If someday some idea arises about somebody -- because mind goes on thinking; it is a betrayal of the inner spirit, it is a renegade, a Judas -- don't repress it, because repression is not going to help. Each night, whenever you have any desire, any erotic desire arising, for half an hour close the eyes and let that desire have full play in fantasy. Whatsoever you want to do, do in fantasy. Don't condemn it; it is natural, just human. Devote that half hour completely to it so that it is finished with.

Soon you will start seeing the whole game of the mind, and within six months all ideas of other persons will disappear from the mind. And when that happens, for the first time you will know 'What Love Is'. 'Up to Now You Have Only Heard the Word'. "

SPIRITUAL SHARING FROM SRI V.GANESAN  AUGUST 16 2015

Dear brothers and sisters,

Pranams.

Somebody was bold enough to tell me, "Why are you making the 'SPIRITUAL SHARING' a 'habit', by daily mailing it to us ?  Isn't it not only NOT good but also bad in the sense that one more 'habit' is added to our routine life of habits ? "  What else can I do, except smiling.

When a thorn is stuck in the sole of one's foot, only another 'thorn' is capable of removing it !   To remove the habit of getting attached to one's 'name' and 'form', another set of 'Name' and 'Form' alone has to be applied -- in the form of chanting God's Name ( nama japa - God's Name) and offering worship to the 'Idol' or 'Picture' of God ( pooja or murti dhyana -- God's Form ) !

Sri Bhagavan guides us with details about "dhida jnana "  and " adhida jnana ".  Staying in the 'SELF'  with  " Firm and Undisturbed WISDOM" is "dhida jnana "; and, the intellectual understanding of  'What is Wisdom and how to attain IT -- very clearly too'  is  " adhida jnana ".   And, one could solidly be established in "dhida  jnana " only when the " adhida jnana " is entirely given up or transcended.  Conversely, it may not be possible to attain the solidity, without the foundation of clear understanding of IT.  "Spiritual aspiration" (sadhana ) should mature well enough for the flowering of  "Spiritual Perfection" ( Atma Siddhi ) !

When asked, "How long one should do sadhana ?" Sri Bhagavan's response was, "Till the attainment of the [ Atma ] Siddhi ! "

May Sri Bhagavan bless us all !

With Love and Regards

Yours Affectionately,

Ganesan.

Sri Bhagavan said that the 'mind' is only identity of the 'SELF' with the 'body'.  It is a false 'ego' that is created ; it creates false phenomena in its turn, and appears to move in them ; all these are false. The 'SELF' is the only "Reality".  If the false identity vanishes, the persistence of the "Reality" becomes apparent.  It does not mean that "Reality" is not here  and  now .  It is always there and eternally the same.  It is also in everyone's experience. For, everyone knows that "he is ".  "Who is he ?"  Subjectively, " Who Am I ? "  The false 'ego' is associated with 'objects' ; this 'ego' itself is its own 'object. 'Objectivity' is the falsity.  'Subject' is alone the "Reality".  Do not confound yourself with the 'object', namely, the 'body'. This gives rise to the false 'ego', consequently of the 'world' and your movements therein with the resulting misery.  Do not think yourself to be 'this', 'that' or 'anything' ; to be so and so, or to be such and such.  Only leave off the falsity.  The "Reality" will reveal Itself. The scriptures say that the 'SELF' is 'nityasiddha', or "ever present", and yet speak of the removal of 'ajnana' (ignorance).  If the 'SELF' is ( 'nitya' ) 'always' and ( 'siddha' ) 'present', how can there be 'ajnana' (ignorance) ?

For whom is the 'ajnana' ? These are contradictory.  But, such statements are for guiding the earnest seeker in the right way.  He does not readily understand the only "Truth" if mentioned in plain words as in 'natwam naham neme janadhipah' ("Not thou, nor I, nor these things.."). Sri Krishna declared the "Truth", but Arjuna could not grasp it.  Later, Sri Krishna plainly says that people confound Him with the 'body', whereas in reality, He was not born nor will He die.  Still Arjuna requires the whole " Srimad Bhagavad Gita " for the "Truth" to be made clear to him.

Look !  The 'SELF' is only "BE-ing", not being 'this' or 'that'.  It is simple "Being".  "BE" -- and there is an end of the ignorance.  Enquire for whom is the ignorance.  The 'ego' arises when you wake up from sleep.  In deep sleep, you do not say that you are sleeping and that you are going to wake up or that you have been sleeping so long.  But, still you are there.  Only when you are awake you say that you have slept.  Your wakefulness comprises sleep also in it.

Realise your pure "Being".  Let there be no confusion with the 'body'.  The 'body' is the result of 'thoughts'. The 'thoughts' will play as usual, but you will not be affected.  You were not concerned with the 'body' when asleep ; so, you can always remain.

[Post # 1,353] Reminiscence of Aswini Kumar Dutta:

The last time I visited him I had with me the headmaster of our school, who had just then graduated. As soon as Sri Ramakrishna saw him, he asked me: "Where did you pick him up? He's a fine fellow!"

Then he continued: "You are a lawyer. You are very clever. Can you give me a little of your cleverness? The other day your father came here and stayed three days."
Myself: "How did you find him?"
Master: "A nice man. But now and then he talks nonsense."
Myself: "Please help him get over it when you see him next."
At this Sri Ramakrishna smiled a little.

Myself: "Please give us a few instructions."
Master: "Do you know Hriday?"
Myself: "Your nephew? I know him only by name."
Master: "Hriday used to say to me: 'Uncle, please don't give out your stock of instructions all at once. Why should you repeat the same things over and over again?' I would reply: 'You fool, what's that to you? These are my words and if I like I shall repeat them a hundred thousand times. You keep quiet!"
Myself (smiling): "Exactly so!"

A little later he sat up on the bed. He repeated "Om" several times and began to sing a song whose first line is: "Dive deep, O mind, dive deep in the Ocean of God's Beauty."
Hardly had he sung one or two lines when he himself dived deep and was lost in samadhi.

Questioner: “Can a Jnani help not only those who follow his path but also others who follow other paths?”
Bhagavan: “Undoubtedly. He can help people whatever path they choose to follow. It is something like this. Suppose there is a hill. There will be very many paths to climb it. If he were to ask people to climb by the way he came, some may like it and some may not. If people who do not like it are asked to climb by that path, and by that path only, they will not be able to come up. Hence a Jnani helps people following any particular path whatever it may be. People who are midway may not know about the merits and demerits of other paths, but one who has climbed the summit and sits there observing others coming up is able to see all the paths. He will therefore be able to tell people who are coming up to move a little to this side or that or to avoid a pitfall. The goal is the same for all, you see.”

Everybody says, "Control yourself. Control the mind." People have been trying to do this for thousands of years.

Five thousand years ago, Arjuna asked Krishna a similar question. He said, "This mind is just like air. If you try and catch air in your hand, nothing happens. The fist just closes on empty space. How to control something that I can't even catch hold of?"

Krishna told him, "By abhyasa, which means spiritual practice, and by vairagya, which means detachment."

If you have no attachment to the objects that appear in your mind, then you have learned to control the mind in the natural way.

Direct Experience

M.: Turn your mind inward and spend the time usefully.
In the union of the individual with the Supreme, the Supreme is hearsay and the individual directly experienced.
You can make use only of direct experience;
therefore look [and find out] who you are.

Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi

I am

Identify as Peace-Beauty-Love, do not experience it. Know, "I am inactive, the activity takes place in me, I am That, I am the screen, I never come and I never go."
Identify as Consciousness Itself.
If you do not forget who you are, this appearance of activity is the Cosmic Dance. Stay as 'I am," not as what comes and goes. The individual I-sense is mind, but Being has no frontiers. It is aware of Itself Itself. Identify as Being.

When mind is pure you will see Self in all Beings.Purify the mind by removing all concepts, especially the concept of purity, Then, Self reveals itself to the empty mind
which is Consciousness.

Ego and mind and all creations arise out of Self as Self, even the ugliest of doubts and the most separate of differences rise from the beautiful source as Isness. In Self, there are no do's and don'ts. If there is unhappiness you are not unhappy, you are the Untouched Awareness of this unhappiness. As waves are not separate from ocean, nor rays from sun, you are not separate from existence. You are the Moment in which all is.

success and failure

Success and failure
================

When any act has become fruitful,
do not become proud, thinking
‘This was achieved by my enterprise’;
(on the other hand),
become convinced that God is gracious.

When the desired success is not won,
it should not be thought that the action has proved unfruitful;
the fruit (of it) is just the understanding that actions become fruitful (in the usual sense) by the grace of God,
not by mere human effort.

After doing a wrong action, one should not hide it from self-love;
one should resolve to act rightly in future, avoiding faults.

Success and failure are due to destiny,
and not to willpower or the lack of it.

One should try to gain equipoise of mind under all circumstances.
That is willpower.

It is better for the seeker to be in a worldly position arousing compassion from other men, than for him to be in a state to be envied by them.

~ Bhagvan Sri Ramana Maharishi

Deep exhaustion fills me . . .
Not like something I have known before
It is not of the body . . . nor of the emotions
It is like something I have been carrying for lifetimes . . .
This seeking . . . of something other than what is
I cannot go on any longer
I am so tired
I give up
Whatever is . . . is
Whatever I am . . . I am
If the mind wants to think . . . that's ok
If the eyes want to cry . . . that's ok
If the body wants to rest . . . that's ok
Whatever is . . . is totally ok with me
I want nothing more than this . . .
To live life . . . each moment . . . whatever it brings
To just be myself . . .
No more looking for more . . .
whether its enlightenment . . . nirvana . . . bliss . . . freedom
I want nothing
Just to breathe
and not play this game anymore
I am just too tired to go on . . .
Even if a wise man . . . were to come and say . . .
but just listen to me . . . with these words you will be enlightened
I would close my ears . . . and say "thank you" . . . "I love you"
but please . . . no more words!

Silence reveals itself only to itself. Only when we enter as nothing and stay as nothing, will silence open its secret. Its secret is itself.

That's why I say all the words, all the books, all the teachings, and all the teachers can only get you to the door, and perhaps entice you to enter. Once there, you start to feel the presence of silence very powerfully.

When this happens, something spontaneously arises that's willing to enter it without being somebody. That is the sacred invitation. Inside you find that silence is the final and ultimate teacher and the final and ultimate teaching. It's the only teacher that won't speak to you.

Silence is the only teacher and teaching that keeps our humanness on its knees all the time. With any other teaching or teacher, we find we can get up. We can think, "Oh, I heard Adya said dah-dah-dah, and it sounds good," and we find ourselves lifting up off the floor of surrender. We turn away from our most sacred and beautiful humility.

Silence is the ultimate and best teacher because in silence is the never-ending welcoming to do that which our human heart truly desires, which is to always be with our knees on the floor, always be in that sort of devotion to Truth. Silence is the only teaching and the only teacher that is there all the time. Every minute that you are awake, every minute that you are alive, every minute that you breathe, it's right there.

ЁЯМ║ЁЯМ║ЁЯМ║ Happy Deepawali ЁЯМ║ЁЯМ║ЁЯМ║

Sri Ramana Maharshi about Deepavali.

The Conquest of Hell (Naraka) The Puranas say that Lord Narayana has killed the demon [of misery], Naraka Asura.
This demon is none other than the one who lives as “I am this body, the source of misery”.
One who seeks Naraka Asura’s [i.e., the ego’s] source,
and thus annihilates him, is truly Lord Narayana Himself.

The Deepavali-bath,
which is taken by all people on the fourteenth moon in remembrance of the conquest of Naraka,
signifies the bath of Jnana,
which is taken after destroying the ego Naraka Asura,
by searching for his source.

The above two verses were summarised in the following verse by Sri Bhagavan:

He who kills Narakasura (the ego)
with the Wheel [i.e.weapon] of Jnana,
by enquiring,“Where is the source of Narakasura
who rules over Narakaloka,
this wretched body, as ‘I’?”, is Lord Narayana;
and that day [of the ego’s destruction]
is the auspicious day of the fourteenth moon.

Deepavali signifies the great Self-Effulgence which shines after destroying the reflected light [i.e. the ego], Narakasura,
who was ruling this filthy body,
which is the form of hell, as ‘I’.

Deepavali signified
the shining of Self after the destruction,
through enquiry,
of the greatest sinner,Naraka [the ego],
who took the abode of this filthy body,
which is the form of hell, as ‘I’.

He is Narakasura (a demon)
who feels attached in the thought
that he is the body.
That attachment to the body itself is a Naraka (hell).

The life of a person who has that attachment,
even if he be a Maharajah,is hellish.
Destroying the attachment to the body,
and the self shining by itself as Self is Deepavali.

He is the king of hell
who says that he is the body
which is hell itself.

He is Narayana who ascertains who Naraka is,
and destroys him with His vision of wisdom, Jnana Drishti.
That is the auspicious day of Narakachathurdasi.

The false belief that
this hell-like house called body is me,
is Naraka himself.
To destroy that false belief and
let the self shine as Self, is Deepavali.

~ Guru Vachaka Kovai

5

As long as there are impressions of objects in the mind, so long the enquiry
‘Who am I?’ is required.

As thoughts arise they should be destroyed then and there in the very place of their origin through enquiry.

If one resorts to contemplation of the Self unintermittently, until the Self is gained, that alone  would do.

As long as there are enemies within the fortress,
they will continue to sally forth;
if they are destroyed as they  emerge,
the fortress will fall into our hands.

~ The Collected Works of Sri Ramana Maharshi. Chapter: Who am I?

4

No matter how many thoughts thus occur to you, if you would with acute vigilance enquire immediately as and when each individual thought arises to whom it has occurred, you would find it is to ‘me’.
If then you enquire ‘Who am I?’ the mind gets introverted and the rising thought also subsides.

Sri Ramana Maharshi

3

You will find that
you do not need
to go anywhere
to get to the 'I'.

Instead all that
you have to do is
STOP all the movement of the mind
and
you are Here.

~ Sri Papaji

554. The caterpillar gets itself imprisoned in its own cocoon.
Even so is the worldly soul caught in the
meshes of its' own desires.

But when the caterpillar develops into a bright and beautiful butterfly, it
bursts the Cocoon and flies out freely enjoying the light and air.
Even so the worldly soul can fly out of
the meshes of Maya with the wings of discrimination and dispassion for worldly things.

Sometimes, when someone would come to Dipa Ma
with their troubles, she would laugh and laugh.
She couldn't stop laughing.

Finally, she would: "This problem you are facing is no problem at all.
It is because you think, 'This is mine.' It is because you think, 'There is something for me to solve.'

Don't think in this way, and then there will be no trouble."

be the self

BE THE SELF
----------------------

Q: When a man realizes the Self, what will he see?

A: There is no seeing.
Seeing is only being.
The state of Self-realization, as we call it, is not attaining something new or reaching some goal which is far away,
but simply being that which you
always are and which you always have been.

All that is needed is that you give up your realization of the not-true as true. All of us
are regarding as real that which is not real. We have only to give up this practice on our part.
Then we shall realize the Self as the Self;
in other words,
`Be the Self'.

At one stage you will laugh at yourself
for trying to discover the Self which is so self-evident. So, what can we say to this question?

That stage transcends the seer and the seen. There is no seer there to see anything. The seer who is seeing all this now ceases to exist and the Self alone remains.

Q: How to know this by direct experience?

A: If We talk of knowing the Self, there must be two selves, one a knowing self, another the self which is known, and the
process of knowing. The state we call realization is simply being oneself, not knowing anything or becoming anything.

If one has realized, one is that which alone is and which alone has always been.
One cannot describe that state.
One can only be that.

Of course, we loosely talk of Self-realization, for want of a better term.
How to `realize' or make real that which alone is real ?

~ Bhagvan Sri Ramana Maharishi
- Be as you are.

self

There is no goal to be reached. There is nothing to be attained. You are the Self. You exist always. Nothing more can be predicated of the Self than that it exists. Seeing God or the Self is only being the Self or yourself. Seeing is being.

You, being the Self, want to know how to attain the Self. It is something like a man being at Ramanasramam asking how many ways there are to reach Ramanasramam and which is the best way for him.

All that is required of you is to give up the thought that you are this body and to give up all thoughts of the external things or the not-Self.

whoever earnestly seeks refuge in him
   Lord Arunachala Ramana

he eagerly welcomes them
   and generously grants the shelter

whoever worships him
he gifts the fulfilment in life, the peace

wherever he is praised
his grace takes control of their lives

however their life styles maybe
he purifies and reforms their minds

whatever his devotees offer
he kindly accepts them willing fully

whoever chants his holy name
he grants a simple and dignified life

whoever wants to serve his divine feet
he makes them as his servant

his devotees gaining his grace
they live in harmony with the world

whoever praises his glory
   so weak he is

like a boy gets coyed by a beautiful girl
he falls in the net of his devotees love

whoever gives himself to him
he gives himself as an exchange

Such is the glory of Sri Ramana
where words lose all their meaning

privileged are his devotees
Iam lucky to be one of those.

Emptiness is there; space is there.
This is your inherent nature. You can call it presence or space or anything else. It is obstructed by desire and by thinking. It is always obstructed by desire.
Emptiness is just the lack,
the absence of thoughts and desires.

When you have a burden on your shoulder, you are restless. Let us say that you are holding onto two hundred pounds and that you want to get rid of this trouble, this burden. When you drop it, you have not gained anything. You have not attained some new state that was never there before. You have simply thrown something away that was troubling you and returned to your inherent nature, the inherent state that was there before you loaded yourself up with this weight.

This thinking process, this burden, is a desire that we always carry with us. I am showing you how to drop this unwanted burden.
When you ask the question, "Who is thinking?" you arrest the process of thinking and return back to your true nature, your inherent nature, your spontaneous nature, the pure Source that is empty.
This is your own nature, and this is what you are always.
The mind does not enter there.
Time does not enter.
Death does not enter.
Fear does not enter.

This is your inherent, Eternal nature. If you stay there, there will be no fear. If you step out of it, you step into samsara, manifestation, and there you are in trouble all the time.

happiness

HAPPINESS
===========
The reason why somebody really is not happy, is because  they don't really know yet who they are. That's the only reason. If you really were aware of who you really are, your  real nature, happiness would exude from every pore of your body. It's just wonderful. Happiness is. There is really
no reason for anyone to be unhappy.

People who are unhappy take the world too seriously. They take themselves too seriously. They take life too  seriously. They think things are real, and they're going to last. It makes no difference what position you’re in right  now. It makes no difference what's going on in your life. It makes no difference where you are, or who you are. The  only thing you have to do is come to terms with yourself. When you understand yourself, how can you possibly be
unhappy? Your self is the self of the universe. Your self is consciousness.
Consciousness is just being conscious of
your happiness, being totally conscious. When you're totally conscious you have to be happy.
Why?
Because what  we call happiness is the substratum of existence. It's the underlying cause of everything.

Do not judge by appearances. Do not look at things and believe that's the way they are. Live in the moment.
Can you  be unhappy in the moment?
The only reason, again, you're unhappy is because you're thinking of some condition or  situation you don't like.
True?
You're thinking about something from the past or you're worried about something
that's going to happen in the future. That's the only reason you're sad or unhappy. But if you learn to live in the  moment, if you learn to become aware now, how can you possibly be unhappy?
Because now is bliss.

Just don't think. Experience now. If you're really not thinking and you're experiencing now, you're in bliss. Now is reality. Now is ultimate oneness. Now is liberation. But as soon as you allow your mind to tell you, "Oh this is  nothing but a bunch of b.s.," why do you think so? You are thinking of a condition, you are thinking of a situation in
your life that you don't like. You're thinking of something that's wrong some place, somewhere. And you believe it's  going to last forever.

We do not change conditions. We change ourselves. As you know, you've changed conditions most of your ife, and  when you get into a new situation, everything seems rosy. But then after a while you turn right back to your old  ways. The novelty has worn off and again you're unhappy. You therefore have to do things to be happy. You have to  watch a lot of TV, or go to the movies, or read newspapers, or read books, or get involved in some kind of situation,
so you don't think. The only reason you get involved in all kinds of physical, material situations, is so you will not  have to think. You will be too busy to think. But when you're alone, when you're by yourself, when there is no one  around, how long can you sit by yourself before you become mad at yourself or angry over something, and you turn  on the TV, or drink a bottle of beer, or go bowling, or do something.

Even those of you who go look at nature, climb mountains, enjoy flowers and the trees, are doing so because you  really believe that the joy, and the love, and the experience you see out there is external to you. So even the beauty  of the so called world is erroneous. You're running away from something. You're looking for beauty outside of  yourself. You have to learn that you are the beauty. You are the joy. You are the flowers that you enjoy so much.
You are the trees and the ocean and the sky and the mountains. It's all coming from you.

If you really realize that you are that, would you run around seeking things?
Everything that you want is within you.
You are that. Even relationships. You look for relationship with someone so they can make you happy, so you can  enjoy their company, so you can love them, so you can be with them. But I can assure you that within yourself is a  greater love, a greater joy, a greater peace than you can ever find anywhere else. True. You've got it all. There is  nothing, no thing that you need from the outside. And nothing can ever happen to you, because there is no one to  make it happen, except yourself.

When you begin to think erroneously, you imagine all sorts of things are going to happen to you. You imagine that  you’ll lose your job, that you'll be bankrupt, you'll get sick, you'll die from disease. You have all kinds of  imaginings. This is the only thing that makes you miserable. If you can only learn to look within, if you can only  learn to dive deep within yourself and identify with the self, merge with the self, I can't begin to tell you the joy you would feel.
There is nowhere you have to go.
There is no one you really have to meet. There is no thing you have to  do.
You simply have to be yourself.
You are the joy of the world.

~ The Collected Works of Robert Adams.

silence

"That which should be adhered to is only the experience of Silence,
because in that Supreme State nothing exists to be attained other than oneself.

That which Is, is Mouna (Silence).

How can Mouna be explained in words?
The highest form of Grace is Silence.

The experience of Silence alone is the real and perfect knowledge."

~ Bhagvan Sri Ramana Maharishi

2

"Consider that everything you possess at this moment is, by its very nature, guaranteed not to be yours. Sooner or later, every relationship you have is guaranteed to dissolve. Everything that lives will die; everything that is created eventually will be destroyed. If impermanence is the true nature of reality, this is all the more reason not to get too attached to your visions."

~Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche

meditation

The life of action need not be renounced. If you meditate for an hour or two every day you can then carry on with your duties. If you meditate in the right manner then the current of mind induced will continue to flow even in the midst of your work.

The only happiness there is, is of the Self.
That is the truth.
There is no happiness in worldly objects.
Because of our ignorance
we imagine we derive happiness from them.
