Ego

Sri Ramana Maharshi ~~~ Talk 597.

The ego makes you aware of others
and in its absence there are no others to be seen.
The Self is beyond the ego
and is realised after the ego is eliminated.

The elimination of the ego
makes one unaware of others.

**********

Inasmuch as there is no ego in him,
there are not others for him.

What is the highest benefit that can be conferred on others?
It is happiness.

Happiness is born of Peace.
Peace can reign only when there is no disturbance.
Disturbance is due to thoughts which arise in the mind.
When the mind itself is absent there will be perfect Peace.

Unless a person had annihilated his mind
he cannot gain peace and be happy.
Unless he himself is happy he cannot bestow happiness on others.

When there is no mind he cannot be aware of others.
So the mere fact of his Self-Realisation
is itself enough to make all others happy.

Q.: Can samadhi come and go?

M.: What is samadhi?
Samadhi is one’s essential nature.
How then can it come or go?

If you do not realise your essential nature,
your sight remains obstructed.
What is the obstruction?
Find it and remove it.

So one’s efforts are meant only
for the removal of obstructions which hide the true vision.
The real nature remains the same.

When once it is realised it is permanent.

Quotes

That this entire phenomenal show of the universe has no purpose indicates the obvious futility of trying to become something special. Once the self-conscious ego takes over all spontaneity is at once destroyed. Just simply be as you are. The purposeless vision enjoys everything.

~~ Ramesh Balsekar (paraphrased)
........

Consciousness has produced this play.
Consciousness has written the script.
Consciousness is playing all the characters.
And Consciousness is witnessing the play.
It's a one man show.

Thoughts are bound to arise. The trick is not to get involved.but to ignore them altogether. ~Ramesh Balsekar

The only ultimate understanding is that nothing is. Not even he who understands. ~Ramesh Balsekar
.....
The self realization is not only effortless what you are trying to find is what you already are. ~Ramesh Balsekar
.....
The final truth, as Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj and all the sages before them have clearly stated, is that there is neither creation nor destruction, neither birth nor death, neither destiny nor free will, neither any path nor any achievement. All there is is Consciousness.

~ Ramesh Balsekar

Ceasing to conceptualize means ceasing to perceive objectively, which means perceiving non-objectively. It is to see the universe without choice or judgement and without getting into subject-object relationship. What happens then? Nothing, except that you are what you were before you were born: everything.

~ Ramesh Balsekar

Physical death

The Maharaj had once been told by someone, "You will die." He retorted: "I am dead already. Physical death will make no difference in my case. I am timeless being." (I Am That, dialogue 55) On the morning of Tuesday, September 8, 1981, the Maharaj, knowing that the end of the physical body was near, invited a few close associates to come visit him later in the evening. That night he went into the “no-mind” state: his breathing grew shallower and shallower, finally stopping altogether at 7:32 p.m.

Back in the 1960s, Sri Nisargadatta had one afternoon fully witnessed his own "death," and now he had dropped the dream-like body with the greatest ease and peace, to abide as the videhamukti state, the all-pervasive, free state of Absolute Awareness, before/beyond the body. With him at the end were his remaining family members, two close attendants, his long-time friend and chief translator, Saumitra Mullarpattan, and another translator-friend of more recent years, Ramesh Balsekar.

The next day a funeral procession, involving many hundreds of devotees and a lorry gorgeously decked out with roses and garlands, started at 12:15 p.m. and, amidst a musical band and dancers, made its way to the Banganga cremation ground, where the mahasamadhi (resting) site of Nisargadatta's guru Sri Siddharamesvar is also located. At 3:40, Maharaj’s son Chittaranjan Maruti Kambli lit the funeral pyre and the body of Sri Nisargadatta was placed on it, to dissolve into the elements from whence it came.
The physical body is gone, but the powerful spiritual influence of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj lives on.

Yoga of knowledge

Jnanayoga or the Yoga of knowledge 18 - b
Even here is the mortal plane conquered by those whose mind is established in unity ; since the Absolute is untouched by evil and is the same to all , hence they are established in the Eternal . Just as a ghost remains amongst people without being seen , he is not recognized by the world , although he dwells in the body . Just as when water is kissed by the wind , it dances on water and gets a different name , namely a wave , so he bears a name and a form , but he has truly become Brahma { supreme soul } , in as much as his mind has attained equanimity towards all . The Lord said O Arjuna , I shall tell you in brief the characteristics possessed by a person with equable mind . He who , with firm intellect and free from doubt , rejoices not on obtaining what is pleasant and does not feel perturbed on meeting with the unpleasant , that knower of Brahm lives eternally in identity with Brahm . Just as mountain is not carried away by a flood of mirage , he is not moved by good or bad happenings . He has truly known the essence of equanimity ; he has become one with Brahm , so said Krishna to Partha .
He whose mind remains unattached to sense -objects , derives through meditation the Sattvika { good } joy which dwells in the mind ; then that Yogi , having completely identified himself through meditation with Brahm , enjoys eternal Bliss . As his mind is surfeit with the boundless joy of the Self , he does not turn to the external sense organs . Tell me , if the Chakora bird has feasted on the sweet rays of the moon from the plate of lotus petals , will it deign to chew the desert sand ? So if a person who has attained to the bliss of Self , forsakes sense - objects , is there any need to talk about it ? Now think very clearly as a matter of curiosity about those who are dazzled by the sensuous pleasures . The pleasures which are born of sense - contacts are verily a source of suffering only { though appearing as enjoyable to worldly - minded people } . They have a beginning and an end { they come and go } ; Arjuna , it is for this reason that a wise man does not indulge in them {5 / 22 } . Those who have not known the Self and are ignorant of Bliss , alone think these sense - objects to be delectable . But if you still maintain that one derives happiness from sense - objects , then why cannot worldly affairs be carried on in the flash of lightning ? Tell me , if one can ward off the sun , the wind and the rain by taking shelter under a cloud , then why should one build three - storeyed houses ? Just as the planet Mars is called auspicious { mangala } or the mirage is called water , likewise misleading is the talk of happiness from the sense - objects . Tell me , can the shadow of the cobra's hood give a cooling sensation to the mouse ? Just as the bait is good so long as the fish does not swallow it , so is the contact with the sense - objects . Know this to be undoubtedly true .
He alone , who is able to withstand , in this very life before casting off this body , the urges of lust and anger , is a Yogi , and he alone is a happy man . He who has happiness , joy and light within , that Yogi becomes one with Brahm and finds eternal Bliss . In Brahm the Sages find Bliss , with their sins destroyed and doubts cleared , who after controlling their minds , devote themselves to the good of all beings . Beatitude of God is near to the austere souls , who are subdued in mind , who are free from desire and anger and who have known the Self . Those who have withdrawn their minds from the sense - objects and subdued them , they do not wake up again from the state of Bliss . Know that they are the persons who have become the Supreme Brahm itself , which is the mainspring of the knower of Self .
He who sees that all actions are performed in every-way by nature { Prakriti } and the Self as the non - doer , he alone verily sees { 13 / 29 } .

Great upnishad

The syllable Om is verily all that exists.
Under it is included all the past, the present and the future, as well as that which transcends time. Verily all this is Brahman.
The Atman is Brahman. This Atman is four-footed.
The first foot is the Vaisvanara, who enjoys gross things, in the state of wakefulness.
The second foot is the Taijasa, who enjoys exquisite things in the state of dream.
The third is the Prajna who enjoys bliss in the state of deep sleep. The fourth is Atman, who is alone without a second, calm, holy and tranquil

Sahaj samadhi

Ramana Hridayam

TEMPORAL AND ETERNAL SAMADHI

Q: I maintain that the physical body of a person immersed in samadhi as a result of unbroken contemplation of the Self, need not become motionless. It may be active or inactive. Others assert that physical movement definitely prevents nirvikalpa samadhi,or unbroken contemplation. What is your opinion?

M: Both of you are right — you are referring to sahaja nirvikalpa and the other to kevala nirvikalpa. In the case of kevala the mind lies immersed in the light of the Self. The subject discriminates one from the other, and then there is activity.

Movement of the body, of the sight, of the vital force, of the mind, and the perception of objects and activity are obstructions for him.

But in sahaja, the mind has resolved into the Self and has been lost. So the differences and obstructions that I mentioned before do not exist here. The activities of such a being are like the feeding of a sleepy child — perceptible to the onlooker but not to the subject.

The driver sleeping in his moving (bullock) cart is not aware of the motion of the cart because his mind has sunk in darkness. Similarly the sahaja jnani remains unaware of his bodily activities because his mind is dead, having been resolved in the ecstasy of chit ananda (Self).

(Dead mind means mano nasa. What ‘dies’ is the ability to identify with thoughts and body. All identity has been absorbed into the Self.)
