What may appear to be changes in the nature or character of an individual from experiences of divine love, universal brotherhood, or physical or psychic ecstasy are nonetheless affective phenomena and therefore movements in consciousness, not Self-realization.

Do social service by relieving suffering whenever you see it, but do it with the feeling ‘I am the Lord’s tool’.

Guru Ramana Vachana Mala...

The sheaths are like the
father - in - law's house (to a new bride);
The Supreme Reality,
which is Pure Consciousness in the Heart,
is like the parent's house,
so one should cast off the suffering
there is in the former by getting
fixed in the latter....

If you investigate, you will see that you cannot possibly be a human being. Human being is just a name given to an entity, for we don't know what else to call it. You're always changing, changing, changing. You're not the same person you were ten, twenty years ago. When you go to sleep and you're in deep sleep, you forget about yourself. When you dream you forget about yourself. When you're awake, like you are now, you forget about your dreams and your deep sleep.

Therefore I ask you, what is your true state? Are you the person who dreams? Are you the person who is in deep sleep? Are you the person who exists right now? Who are you? What are you?

You can only find out by investigation. You begin to see that your personal self is only a thought, an idea, a bad dream. You are not the person who is born, goes through the vicissitudes of life, dies, and that's it. When I tell you, “You were never born,” it sounds ludicrous. When I tell you, “You can never die,” it sounds even worse. Yet if you investigate and you trace it back, where did the first born come from? Who gave it birth? You can go into the story of creation. That will appease some people, but the thinking person knows it's a story.

In a dream there is no story of creation. You begin to dream just where you are. It just appears. The dream comes out of you, becomes externalized. There's a sky, there are stars, there are people. All sorts of things are happening. You go through experiences in your dream. You are happy, you're sad, you're mad. But yet when you wake up, the dream is gone.

This life is called the mortal dream. You have to catch yourself when you take life too serious, and compare it with a dream. When you take your dream serious, and you become violently upset over something, and I try to explain to you, you're dreaming, you will never believe me, because the dream world is very powerful at that time.

The doctor has diagnosed cancer, you've got two months to live. But I tell you, "You're dreaming." Do not put your energy on that. Rather turn within. See your reality. Understand that this is a dream. Well you chase me away. You do not want to accept that, because no one else believes it. Yet you wake up in the morning, and it was just a dream.

Think about the problems, the wonderful experiences, everything you've been through since you were born. It appears so real, doesn't it? And even now you are a product of all your samskaras, all of your preconceived ideas, your concepts, and how you were brought up and trained. This is your life. You do not know any other life but this. Yet every person seems to come from a different upbringing. Every person has their own beliefs, their own ideas, what's right, what's wrong, what is good, what is bad.

That's how wars start. That's how man's inhumanity to man begins. When you believe I'm right and you're wrong. When you begin to see things that are not right and you want to correct them. No one has ever told us, instead of doing that, dive within yourself and see perfection. See the atman. See unlimited bliss. Begin to dwell on the reality, and soon your world will become reality.

From ~~~ Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Talk 318

D.: I do not have fear in sleep whereas I have it now.
M.: Because dwiteeyadvai bhayam bhavati
- fear is always of a second one. Of what are you afraid?
D.: By reason of the perception of the body, the senses,
the world, Isvara, doership, enjoyment etc.
M.: Why do you see them if they cause fear?
D.: Because they are inescapable.
M.: But it is you who sees them. For whom is the fear?
Is it for them?
D.: No, it is for me.
M.: Because you see them, you fear them.
Do not see them and there will be no fear.
D.: What then should I do in the waking state?
M.: Be the Self;
there will be no second thing to cause you fear.
D.: Yes. Now I understand.
If I see my Self, then the sight is warded off the non-self
and there is happiness. Yet there is the fear of death.
M.: Only the one who is born should die.
See if you have been born at all
in order that death should threaten you.

From ~~~ Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Talk 58.

Bhagavan.:
One should hold on to the single Atman
and not swerve therefrom.

There will be no distraction
and no fear.

Troubles arise only
when there is a second to oneself.

If the Atman be realised to be only unitary,
there is no second and therefore
no cause for fear.

149. The existence-consciousness “I am,” which continues to live even after the mind has died,
alone is the Supreme Reality (Brahman), which continues to exist even after the entire universe has been destroyed (pralaya).

Since there is never even for a moment any such thing as death or destruction for this Self-consciousness “I am”,
know that this “I am” alone is the unending and indestructible supreme Self.

BHAGAVAN SRI RAMANA MAHARSHI.
Chapter 26. The Fear of Death

11

Have no fear and plunge into your own Being.
When "you" disappear, all fear will also.
Stay Quiet, Be Still, Here you are.
Stay as the Presence in your Heart.
Do not fear meeting the Self, it is what you have always been.
Nothing can be lost, have no fear.
-The Truth is-

fear

Be the self ,
There will be no second thing to cause fear.

You cannot collect my pointings, use them to see what cannot be seen with fleshly eyes. So these pointings are not jewels, they are living food for the Self, for the soul. Use them to recognise the Self. Stay as the Self untill this advice is needed no more. The Self can be without a Self image as you, but this Self image cannot exsist without the Self. You may enjoy the Self image, knowing it is merely an image, a play that will not last. So use them these words, do not collect them or you will lose them. Eat them, they will show you home, distanceless. So where is the journey?.Only a journey of understanding.

The cause of suffering is dependence, and
independence is the remedy.
=================================

All suffering is born of desire.
..............
Such desire is of the mind.
...............
Selfishness is the cause  of suffering.
There is no other cause.
.................
Beyond the mind  there is no suffering.
................
It is selfishness,
due to a self-identification with the
body that is the main problem and the cause of all  other problems.
..................
One suffers along with what one thinks oneself to be.
....................
With the dissolution of the personal
"I" personal suffering disappears.

Q: When a man realizes the Self, what will he see?

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

There is no seeing.
Seeing is only being.

The state of Self-realization, as we call it,
is not attaining something new or
reaching some goal which is far away,
but simply being that which you always are
and which you always have been.

All that is needed is that
you give up your realization of the not-true as true.

All of us are regarding as real that which is not real.
We have only to give up this practice on our part.

Then we shall realize the Self as the Self;
in other words, `Be the Self'.

At one stage you will laugh at yourself for trying to discover the Self which is so self-evident.
So, what can we say to this question?

That stage transcends the seer and the seen.
There is no seer there to see anything.
The seer who is seeing all this now ceases to exist
and the Self alone remains.

Q: How to know this by direct experience?

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

If We talk of knowing the Self, there must be two selves,
one a knowing self,
another the self which is known,
and the process of knowing.

The state we call realization is simply being oneself,
not knowing anything or becoming anything.

If one has realized, one is that which alone is
and which alone has always been.

One cannot describe that state.
One can only be that.

Of course, we loosely talk of Self-realization,
for want of a better term.

How to `real-ize' or make real that which alone is real ?

The spark of jnana will easily consume all creation
as if it were a mountain-heap of cotton.
All the crores of worlds being built upon
the weak (or no) foundation of the ego,
they will all topple down when the atomic bomb
of jnana comes down upon them.
