Q. The universe is it actually conscious?
A. Yes, the universe has mind (conscious/sub conscious/unconscious plane of mind...) within the mind/creator’s mind.
Universe has mind, drop once mind, (the imagination of mind/creator’s creation, world, beings, non beings of) universe is gone.
The Self is Self alone, within that whatever is created/imagined by the creator/mind is called beings, humans, animals, plants to planets, worlds, universe.
Creator/mind can’t exist alone, it exist because of self, all individualised self / beings / non beings, plant, animals, mountains, of birth, death, incarnation and reincarnation...etc., is just imagination of creator/mind, hence that imagination of individualised self with body (of being, non being, humans, animals, mountains etc.,) is in the mind of creator/mind, and even creator/mind exist within the Self alone, and also creator’s mind/mind of all creation is having the ability to think, thought, tendencies, ego, conscious mind of aware / awareness or unaware / unawareness, and mind of all being and non-beings is within the creator’s mind/mind, is within the Self alone.
The Self is nothing to do with separation, dualities, maya, illusion, individuality, imagination of creator/mind and its creation of aware / awareness or unaware / unawareness or to claim infinite or finite, but it is the job of creator/mind, the Self alone is (beyond) silence and stillness, neither disturbed by creator/mind of turbulence nor its creation of beings /or non beings of birth, death, in coronation and reincarnation ..etc,
