Get rid of all questions, all doubts, all fears, all apprehensions about spiritual life and live in the moment unafraid, full of total joy and happiness and peace. And you will see you have always been enlightened you already are enlightened everything is okay.

But if you keep worrying about when it's going to happen aren't you really saying: "I don't have it yet, there is something really wrong? I am not that and I have to become that?" For in truth you are already that. For in reality you're already enlightened there is nothing you have to do and nowhere you have to go. Be yourself. Be the way you are, totally, completely. The way you are not the body nor the mind nor the experience. The way you are not the doer.

Know that the eradication of the identification with the body is charity, spiritual austerity and ritual sacrifice; it is virtue, divine union and devotion; it is heaven, wealth, peace and truth; it is grace; it is the state of divine silence; it is the deathless death; it is jnana, renunciation, final liberation and bliss.

FIX THE MIND ON THE SELF

Maharshi: Practice is power. If thoughts are reduced to a single thought the
mind is said to have grown strong. When practice remains unshaken it becomes sahaja (natural).

Devotee: What is such practice?

Maharshi: Enquiring into the Self. That is all. Atmanyeva vasam nayet .....
Fix the mind on the SELF.

quotes

"Don't depend on the body and don't remain confined to the body. Use it, respect it, love it, care for it, but remember: you have to leave it one day. It is only a cage, it will be left behind, and the bird will be gone. Before that happens, take care of the bird too. Cleanse your consciousness, because that will be going with you. Your understanding will go with you, not your body.

So don't waste too much time in decorating it with cosmetics, with clothes, with ornaments - don't waste too much time with the body, because the body belongs to the earth and the earth will claim it back. Dust unto dust. You don't belong to the earth, you belong to some beyond, to some unknown.

Your home is in the unknown, here you are only a visitor. Enjoy the visit and use it as much as possible to grow in understanding and maturity, so that you can take home your maturity, your understanding, your wisdom."

Human birth ordinarily implies the experiencing of desire, passion, grief, suffering, old age, disease, happiness, pain and so on.

Yet it is man's duty to bear in mind that he exists for God alone –
for His service and
for the realisation of Him.

Verily, all is within His Law.
How can one who has been able to accept this be still so greatly troubled?

It is but your duty to consider everything as His. Whatever He may do, try to let the thought of Him keep you at peace.

Freedom is free but not cheap. In fact, it is priceless. It will cost you your world, your attachments, your life -- your own self. You will be paying this over and over until you are drained of all 'you' have and all 'you' have saved up. You will exchange all this for that which 'you' cannot have -- your eternal Being.

post 1

To remove problems from your life,
to get rid of unhappy situations,
to remove fears frustrations, you do exactly the same thing.
You do not try to change a condition
by working on the level of conditions.
Do not try to change bad for good, evil for happiness,
for you're working at an ego level.
Rather turn away from both terms.
Let go of both situations,
the good and the bad, the happy and the sad.
Turn from it. Turn to the source, the source of all existence.
And you will find that the situations resolve themselves.
For the source is total harmony, total peace and total love.
The source is God, consciousness, pure awareness.

This is what you've always been but somehow you got lost
in the shuffle, and you think you're a human being.
You think you're limited to your body.
You've been brought up this way with that kind of thinking.
Your schools, your churches, your environment,
your parents have emphasized the fact that you're limited.
You can only go so far.

But I say to you, you're totally unlimited,
you have no circumference anywhere.
You are space. Space is maintained by consciousness.
You are really all over the place.
You're falling apart.
The atoms that you're made out of are not permanent.
You turn this way and you turn that way, you go in all directions
and there is big spaces between the atoms.
Just like everything else in this world.
You're simply a part of all things.
All things are a part of you.

You are wonderful, made in the image of God, but what God?
The God that you created in your mind.
So if your God is a good God
then you think of yourself as a good person.
If your God is a santa clause, God who lives in the sky,
with a long beard that you pray for things to give you things,
the anthropomorphic type of a God saying,
"God I need this, I want this.
Please let me have this," whatever God you believe in
you become. You become the God that you worship.

Or should you worship a God at all?
If you believe that you're an ego or a human being
that is blown around like a leaf, then you should worship a God.
For you have to turn to someone, you have to turn somewhere.
But if you realize that God is within yourself,
if you understand that you are the God that you've been worshipping all these years, it's a whole new ball game.
For you stop worshipping and you start meditating.
By meditating I mean you keep still. You become quiet.
You no longer need use words.

As the mind becomes quiescent, as the thoughts subside,
the divine harmony which has always been
appears to awaken within you.
You become radiantly happy for no reason.
You become totally peaceful for no reason.
You gravitate to the place that you're supposed to be.
The right people come into your life
who are supposed to be in your life.
Everything happens by itself. You need not do anything.

Question : I see you doing things. How can you say that you never perform actions?
Sri Ramana Maharshi : The radio sings and speaks, but if you open it you will find no one inside. Similarly, my existence is like the space; though this body speaks like the radio, there is no one inside as a doer.

nothingness

While everyone in this world strives to get somewhere and become someone, only to leave it all behind after death, you aim for the supreme stage of nothingness.

Live this life as light and empty as the number zero.
We are no different from a pot.
It is not the decorations outside but the emptiness inside that holds us straight. Just like that, it is not what we aspire to achieve but the consciousness of nothingness that keeps us going.

self

Questioner: “If that ego were not there how could the body continue to function from day to day?”

Bhagavan: “Yes. That is it.
The body is a house for us.
This house will be properly maintained only if you are in it.
Hence we must realise that we are keeping the house habitable only so long as we are in it and must never give up the knowledge that the house is separate from the Self. The moment that is forgotten the feeling of ego comes in and troubles begin.

Everything in the world thus appears real
and the destruction of that feeling is the destruction of the ego. When that ego is destroyed nothing (of this world) is
real.

What is to happen will happen; and what is not to happen will not happen.”

“Jnana goes as far as the outer court, but bhakti can enter the inner court. The Pure Self is unattached. Both vidya and avidya are in It, but It is unattached. Sometimes there is a good and sometimes a bad smell in the air, but the air itself is unaffected.

"Once Vyasadeva was about to cross the Jamuna. The gopis also were there. They wanted to go to the other side of the river to sell curd, milk, and cream. But there was no ferry at that time. They were all worried about how to cross the river, when Vyasa said to them, 'I am very hungry.' The milkmaids fed him with milk and cream. He finished almost all their food. Then Vyasa said to the river, 'O Jamuna, if I have not eaten anything, then your waters will part and we shall walk through.' It so happened. The river parted and a pathway was formed between the waters. Following that path, the gopis and Vyasa crossed the river. Vyasa had said, 'If I have not eaten anything'. That means, the real man is Pure Atman. Atman is unattached and beyond Prakriti. It has neither hunger nor thirst; It knows neither birth nor death; It does not age, nor does It die. It is immutable as Mount Sumeru.

"He who has attained this Knowledge of Brahman is a jivanmukta, liberated while living in the body. He rightly understands that the Atman and the body are two separate things. After realizing God one does not identify the Atman with the body. These two are separate, like the kernel and the shell of the coconut when its milk dries up. The Atman moves, as it were, within the body. When the 'milk' of worldly-mindedness has dried up, one gets Self-Knowledge. Then one feels that Atman and body are two separate things. The kernel of a green almond or betel-nut cannot be separated from the shell; but when they are ripe the juice dries up and the kernel separates from the shell. After the attainment of the Knowledge of Brahman, the 'milk' of worldly-mindedness dries up.”

GET RID OF THE MENTAL PROCESSES

CONVERSATION WITH ANNAMALAI SWAMI

‘GET RID OF THE MENTAL PROCESSES…’

If you see suffering all around you it is just a reflection of your own inner suffering. If you want to alleviate suffering go to the root cause, which is the suffering inside yourself. Immerse yourself in the Self. End the maya dream and wake up to the real world of jnana.

Your ideas about the world are all wrong because you are misperceiving it. Your mind is processing what you see in such a way that it makes you think that there is a suffering world outside and apart from you.

If you want to get rid of that suffering world you must eliminate the mental processes that make you misperceive it. When you reach the state of jnana there will be no misperceptions. Your vision will be completely clear. You will be aware that there is no suffering and no world. You will be aware that the Self alone exists.

BEING AWARENESS

When meditating, if you come across interesting experiences do not try to make them happen again. You don’t want to re- experience second hand experiences. That will cause unnecessary agitation.

What you can experience is only what is happening in the present, now.
Samadhi on its own, is not worth achieving unless it helps in getting greater sati*.

When there is ‘hearing’ of something, keep your mind at the ear. You will know what it hears – no need to turn your attention out towards the object. Keep the mind at the ear and note what sensations arise at the ear.

No mind-state can last while you look at it. As soon as you look at it, it disappears.
Most important, the mind has to be in the present moment. Only then it can see paramattha. Truth. Ultimate reality.

A person with sati chooses simply what has better quality, whether it is his actions, words, speech or thoughts, and so the quality of his life improves.
If you do not do what you have to do with quality, it can destroy your whole life.

With sati you are aware, the moment you get excited, angry, upset, so it doesn’t grow to extreme limits. So you regain calmness and control more quickly.

At this point in time it is good to have a teacher to guide you.
Don’t try to get higher and higher in the practice but first try to maintain what you got.
When some memory (good or bad) comes what’s important is that you don’t let it affect you anymore. Just stay with the present moment.

*Sati: - Pali; Sanskrit smс╣Ыti. Smс╣Ыti originally meant "to remember," "to recollect," "to bear in mind, mindfulness."

mindfulness of the body (kaya);
mindfulness of feelings or sensations (vedan─Б);
mindfulness of mind or consciousness (citta);
mindfulness of dhamm─Бs.

HOW IS THE EGO TO BE DESTROYED?
TALK 615

Another from the group asked: How is the ego to be destroyed?

Maharshi.: Hold the ego first and then ask how it is to be destroyed. Who asks this question? It is the ego. Can the ego ever agree to kill itself? This question is a sure way to cherish the ego and not to kill it. If you seek the ego you will find it does not exist. That is the way to destroy it.

In this connection I am often reminded of a funny incident which took place when I was living in the West Chitrai Street in Madura. A neighbour in an adjoining house anticipated the visit of a thief to his house. He took precautions to catch him. He posted policemen in mufti to guard the two ends of the lane, the entrance and the back-door to his own house. The thief came as expected and the men rushed to catch him. He took in the situation at a glance and shouted “Hold him, hold him. There - he runs - there - there.” Saying so he made good his escape. So it is with the ego. Look for it and it will not be found. That is the way to get rid of it.

quotes

Maharshi: The thoughts are only vasanas (predispositions), accumulated in
innumerable births before. Their annihilation is the aim. The state free from vasanas is the primal state and eternal state of purity.

Devotee: It is not clear yet.

Maharshi: Everyone is aware of the eternal Self. He sees so many dying but
still believes himself eternal. Because it is the Truth. Unwillingly the natural Truth asserts itself. The man is deluded by the intermingling of the conscious Self with the insentient body. This delusion must end.

Devotee: How will it end?

Maharshi: That which is born must end. The delusion is only concomitant
with the ego. It rises up and sinks. But the Reality never rises nor sinks. It remains Eternal. The master who has realised says so; the disciple hears, thinks over the words and realises the Self. There are two ways of putting it.
The ever-present Self needs no efforts to be realised, Realisation is already there. Illusion alone is to be removed. Some say the word from the mouth of the Master removes it instantaneously. Others say that meditation, etc., are necessary for realisation. Both are right; only the standpoints differ.

Jnanis

A visitor said, “Jnanis generally retire from active life and do not engage in any worldly activity.”
Bhagavan: They may or may not. Some, even after realising, carry on trade or business or rule over a kingdom. Some retire into forests and abstain from all acts except those absolutely necessary to keep life in the body. So, we cannot say all jnanis give up activity and retire from life.

Visitor: I want to know if Bhagavan can give concrete examples, like the butcher Dharmavyadha mentioned in our books, of jnanis now living and doing their ordinary daily work in life.
Bhagavan did not answer.

Self-realization is the cessation of thoughts and all mental activity. Thoughts are like bubbles upon the surface of the sea (Self).

The false ego is associated with objects; the subject is alone the Reality.

The world is seen by the mind’s reflected light. The moon shines by the reflected light of the Sun. When the Sun has set, the moon is useful for displaying objects. But when the Sun rises no one needs the moon, even though it is visible in the sky. So it is with mind and Heart. The mind is used for seeing objects.

- Conscious Immortality

self

In our world we know that for most of us,
one of the strongest pulls in life is to have someone who you can spend your life with.
Someone whose heart resonates with yours,
someone who has love for you as much as
you have love for them.

This is the way that love is often expressed in
the human kingdom. But love has much broader implications also. As you come to discover the truth of your own self, you come to the very source of love.

When you come to the source of love, your being begins to merge there in that love.
And that love is a universal love, it is not merely a personal love. It continues to expand and radiate until it embraces and encompasses the whole world.

This is not merely spiritual fantasy. You grow in this love because wherever ego has become redundant or absent, universal love shines right there, from there. And it never stops, it never meets a point beyond which it cannot go.

It is this love that is in the core of every living being and certainly within every human being.

And this love and truth are not different.
This love and wisdom are not different.
This love and trust are not different.
This love and life are not different.

This love never runs dry. Outwardly, it may change its form, but inwardly it is unchanging.

May this love so flower in us all and radiate so powerfully, because, if the world needs something, it needs to taste this love again.
And every one has this love in you. If you pray for one person, the power and love that goes into this prayer can be spread for the whole world and it will not drain you. In fact it will energise you.

This love has many different aspects and facets, the love we see expressed here is within the great love, as is the love for your children and for your friends, the love you have for the things you do in life, the love for your work, the love for God, all of this springs from the great love, from the great Source.

There is room for kama [desire] so long as there is an object apart from the subject, i.e., duality. There can be no desire if there is no object. The state of no-desire is moksha. There is no duality in sleep and also no desire. Whereas there is duality in the waking state and desire also is there. Because of duality a desire arises from the acquisition of the object. That is the outgoing mind, which is the basis of duality and of desire. If one knows that bliss is none other than the Self the mind becomes inward turned. If the Self is gained all the desires are fulfilled.

Why do you think of other things?
Why concern yourself with your body, or your mind, or the world?
Why bother with yourself?

Quit trying to solve problems.
This doesn't mean that you are going to do nothing, for as I have told you so often, your body is going to perform the acts it came here to do. If you are meant to be an accountant, you are going to be an accountant. If you are meant to be a preacher, you'll be a preacher. If you are meant to be a homeless person, you will be a homeless person.
But you have absolute nothing to do with it. For you are Parabrahman, absolute reality, and you have absolutely nothing to do with the workings of your body or your mind.

Allow your mind to say and think the way it will, only don't identify with it. Allow your body to do what it must, but do not react to it. Everything will happen of its own accord. When you allow your mind to think of its own accord, the thoughts begin to dissipate, and soon you have empty mind. Empty mind is consciousness, realization. That's all you have to do - have an empty mind. But as long as you believe, "I am the doer,” and you force yourself to have an empty mind, you never will, because the forcing makes the mind stronger. Rather, observe your thoughts, watch the mind thinking, and leave it alone.

Do not identify with your thoughts, or with your body, for in realty there is no body and there are no thoughts, for there is only the self, and you are that.

D.: Is there no way of escape from the miseries of the world?

M.: There is only one way and that consists in not losing sight of one's Self under any circumstances. To enquire "Who am I?" is the only remedy for all the ills of the world. It is also perfect bliss.

When one abides as the Self,
some divine power takes charge of one´s life.
All actions then take place spontaneously, and
are performed very efficiently, without
any mental effort or activity.

quotes

Dr. Srinivasa Rao asked Bhagavan, “When we enquire within ‘who am I?’ what is that?”
Bhagavan: It is the ego. It is only that which makes the vichara also. The Self has no vichara. That which makes the enquiry is the ego. The ‘I’ about which the enquiry is made is also the ego. As the result of the enquiry the ego ceases to exist and only the Self is found to exist.
