......
जैसे H20 = पानी,
यह समीकरण रसायन शास्त्र में आता है;

THE EQUALITY OF THE JNANI D. You have said that the Jnani can be and is active, and deals with men and things. I have no doubt about it now. But you say at the same time, that he has no difference, abheda, to him all is one, he is always in the Consciousness; if so, how does he deal with differences, with men, with things which are surely different? M. He sees these differences as but appearances, he sees them as not separate from the True, the Real, with which he is one. D. The Jnani seems to be more accurate in his expressions, he appreciates the differences better than the ordinary man. If sugar is sweet and wormwood is bitter to me, he too seems to realize it so. In fact, all forms, all sounds, all tastes, etc., are the same to him as they are to others. If so, how can it be said that these are mere appearances? Do they not form part of his life-experience? M. I have said that equality is the true sign of Jnana. The very term equality implies the existence of differences. It is a unity that the Jnani perceives in all differences, which I call equality. Equality does not mean ignorance of distinctions. When you have the Realization, you can see that these differences are very formal, they are not at all substantial, or permanent, and what is essential in all these appearances is the one Truth, the Real. That I call unity. . . . You referred to sound, taste, form, smell, etc. True the Jnani appreciates the distinctions, but he always perceives and experiences the one Real in all of them. That is why he has no preferences, whether he moves about, or talks, or does, it is all the One Real in which he does or moves or talks. He has nothing apart from the one Supreme Truth. - Sat Darshana Bhahashya

Sri Mooji This too shall pass Everything you see, comes to pass. Know that you are not that. All things that are heard, come to pass. Know that you are not that. All things that are touched, come to pass. Know that you are not that. All things that are tasted, come to pass, Know you are not that. All things that are thought of, come to pass, Know that you are not that. All things, which are imagined, come to pass. Know that you are not that. All things that are learned, come to pass, Know you are not that. All that is manifest comes to pass, Know you are not that. All things of the mind come to pass, Know that you are not that. That which does not come to pass, but inside which all phenomena come to pass, know That - to be yourSelf.

Often, in the very moment the flower of pure consciousness is opening, some fear, nervousness and agitation comes up, or a sense of being lost. But something discerns that this is not the old kind of lost feeling. It is not the same old confusion. There is something exciting about this confusion; it is like you are on the cliff of the universe. Sometimes you have to be on the edge of the seat of your own life, not always hiding under the bed looking out. You have to be willing to stand on the cliff of your own existence and feel the air of infinite possibilities that you have never breathed before. In such a moment you will not know a millisecond of what’s in front of you. Nor will you be overly concerned. Facing the great abyss, you will say,“Here I am, take me.” And then plunge into the ocean of your own Source. 💓Mooji

"Don't expect anything from anybody, this is also a great freedom. Don't expect things to be different or people to be in service to you or your own life or projections. Feel gradually that natural feeling of detachment. Dont watch constantly with the eyes of relationship and past and so on. Stay faithful to your own discovery, leave the rest and life will take care of it." ~ Master Mooji

Spiritual Quotes added a new photo.
Thoughts manifest themselves within emptiness and are reabsorbed into it like a face appears and disappears in a mirror; the face has never been in the mirror, and when it ceases to be reflected in it, it has not really ceased to exist. The mirror itself has never changed. So, before departing on the spiritual path, we remain in the so-called "impure" state of samsara, which is, in appearance, governed by ignorance. When we commit ourselves to that path, we cross a state where ignorance and wisdom are mixed. At the end, at the moment of Enlightenment, only pure wisdom exists. But all the way along this spiritual journey, although there is an appearance of transformation, the nature of the mind has never changed: it was not corrupted on entry onto the path, and it was not improved at the time of realisation.

Bliss will follow if you are still. But however much you may tell your mind about the truth, the mind will not keep quiet. It is the mind that won’t keep quiet. It is the mind which tells the mind “Be quiet and you will attain bliss”. ~ Thayumanavar.

In bad company, the three poisons grow stronger, Listening, reflection, and meditation decline, And loving-kindness and compassion vanish- To avoid unsuitable friends is the practice of a bodhisattva. A crystal, when placed on a piece of cloth, takes on the color of that cloth, whether white, yellow, red or black. In the same way, the friends with whom you keep company the most often, whether suitable or unsuitable, will greatly influence the direction your life and practice take. - Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

A Sage has absolutely no teaching to give you. If you want to have a teaching, you’ll have to go to a spiritual teacher, a yogi, a meditation master. But a Sage never has a teaching to give you whatsoever. The idea is to just be in the presence of the Sage, that does the teaching. A Sage does not teach tantric yoga, kundalini yoga, hatha yoga, raja yoga, laya yoga or anything else. For all teachings are from the mind. Where else would they come from. They are all mental concepts. The Sage is beyond the mind, beyond the mental concepts. So how can a Sage give a teaching? A Sage is absolute reality, pure awareness. . Robert Adams

You are invisible, unattached, formless. You are the Witness of all things. Be happy. 1.6 Right and wrong, pleasure and pain, exist in mind only. They are not your concern. You neither do nor enjoy. You are free.

Freedom is free but not cheap. In fact, it is priceless. It will cost you your world, your attachments, your life -- your own self. You will be paying this over and over until you are drained of all 'you' have and all 'you' have saved up. You will exchange all this for that which 'you' cannot have -- your eternal Being. ~ Mooji

If you abide in the ‘I am’ no desires and no karma will touch or affect you. If you remain in the ‘I am’ as ‘I am’ no harm can come to you, the main thing is not go out of it. If you take the ‘I am’ as your destiny no other destiny can befall you. Abide as ‘I am’ and you will see no world, no mind, no distinctions and no directions. - Annamalai Swami, LWB

A woman, with her necklace round her neck, imagines that it has been lost and goes about searching for it, until she is reminded of it by a friend; she has created her own sense of loss, her own anxiety of search and then her own pleasure of recovery. Similarly the Self is all along there, whether you search for it or not. Again just as the woman feels as if the lost necklace has been regained, so also the removal of ignorance and the cessation of false identification reveal the Self which is always present - here and now. This is called realisation. It is not new. It amounts to elimination of ignorance and nothing more. Sri Ramana Maharshi

Maha Vishnu resting in Samadhi “When the mind is completely absorbed in one object of meditation, it is termed Samadhi. The mind identifies itself with the object of meditation. In Samadhi, there is neither Dhyana nor Dhyata (neither meditation nor meditator). The meditator and meditated, the thinker and the thought, the worshipper and the worshipped become one or identical. The Triputi (triad) vanishes. The mind loses its own consciousness and becomes identical with the object of meditation. The meditator has dissolved his personality in the sea of God, drowned and forgotten there till he becomes simply the instrument of God. When his mouth opens, it speaks God's words without effort or forethought through direct intuition and, when he raises his hand, God flows again through that to work a miracle. In Samadhi, there is neither seeing nor hearing. There is neither physical nor mental consciousness. There is only spiritual consciousness. There is only Existence (Sat). That is your real Svarupa. When the water dries up in a pool, the reflection of the sun in the water also vanishes. When the mind melts in Brahman, when the mind-lake dries up, the reflected Chaitanya (Chidabhasa) also vanishes. The Jivatman (personality) goes away. There remains Existence alone. Turiya is the spiritual condition where there is no play of mind, where the mind is dissolved in Brahman. It is the "fourth dimension," where there is infinite Brahmic bliss. It is not a condition of inertia, forgetfulness or annihilation. It is a state of absolute consciousness which baffles all attempts at description. It is the final goal of all. It is Mukti. It is Moksha. Generally, when you have what you call dreamless sleep, it is one of two things; either you do not remember what you dreamt of or you fell into absolute unconsciousness which is almost death-a taste of death. But, there is the possibility of a sleep in which you enter into an absolute silence, immortality and peace in all parts of your being and your consciousness merges into Satchidananda. You can hardly call it sleep, for there is perfect "awareness." In that condition, you can remain for a few minutes or hours or days; but, these few minutes give you more rest and refreshment than hours of ordinary sleep. You cannot have it by chance. It requires a long training. Samadhi is not a stone-like inert state as many people imagine. A life in the spirit (Atman or Divine) is not annihilation. When the self is bound down to its empirical accidents, its activities are not fully exercised and, when the limitations of the empirical existence are transcended, the universal life is intensified and you have enrichment of Self. You will have a rich inner life. You will have an expanded cosmic life and supra-cosmic life, too.” The Divine Life Society

When the individual soul feels renunciation towards worldly enjoyments, scriptures say it has reached its highest perfection. As the mind is freed from its choice and dislike of things, so the soul is liberated by avoiding its egoism and personality. Then it no longer is conscious of the pain that attends future birth and reincarnation. Whoever in his understanding comes to know this state of supreme and inexpressible joy, he is sure to overcome all his worldly appetites that bind him fast to this earth. But whoever labors in his mind with affections to this world, he has to wander in it continually and he destroys the supreme joy of his soul in his continuous turmoil. Say to yourself, "I am none of these things. I am simply awake. I am the absolute reality. Freedom itself." And remain in the silence. Do not look for signs. Do not look for experiences. Do not be so complicated. Become like a child. See everything with awe. Watch everything be alert. Understand it all comes out of your mind. By working on your mind this way you make the mind stronger not weaker. The mind develops greater powers. The idea in Advaita Vedanta is to totally annihilate the mind. To kill the mind that thinks this way. You do not want to think this way. You do not want to think. You do not want. You do not. You do. You. And nothing. Remain in the nothing. ~ ROBERT ADAMS

Question : I see you doing things. How can you say that you never perform actions? Sri Ramana Maharshi : The radio sings and speaks, but if you open it you will find no one inside. Similarly, my existence is like the space; though this body speaks like the radio, there is no one inside as a doer.

#quotes The apparently Self-realised person does not hanker after more pleasure in daily living, nor does he resist whatever comes his way as a sense objects. Wanting some thing positively or not wanting something negatively are both aspect of volition, and in case of apparently Self-realised person there is absolutely no volition. His sensorial apparatus responds to an external stimulus without the intervention of the mind. He lives his life 'like a dry leaf in the breeze'. He knows that his life is being lived according to God's Will or the Cosmic Law, like everyone's life, and merely witnesses life happening naturally. ~ Ramesh Balsekar

'I Am' itself is God. The seeking itself is God. In seeking you discover that you are neither the body nor the mind, and the love of the Self in you is for the Self in all. The two are one. The consciousness in you and the consciousness in me, apparently two, really one. Seek unity and that is love. - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. <3

This desire to be free has arisen in a very few people. Free in this life. This year. This month. Now. This desire will decide. Like a moth who falls in love with the flame and rushes toward it without any delay. No holding on or holding back along the way. How much time to become flame itself? Going toward the flame is the decision to be free -- going toward the Atman. The Atman consumes you, giving you eternal existence, eternal consciousness, and eternal bliss. And nobody knows it. Everyone is searching outside through the senses. Whatever you see, wherever you see name and form, it is not true. These names and forms will never give you peace or love. Whatever you see, feel, or experience through pleasurable sense objects ultimately will leave you hungry. So this is the decision and the discernment. With this discernment, this discrimination, a few will decide "I want to be free." They will find a teacher. The teacher is within you. The satguru is within you. Your desire for freedom is going toward that satguru, that Brahman. 🌹Papaji; Wake Up and Roar

D.: I meditate neti-neti (not this - not this). M.: No - that is not meditation. Find the source. You must reach the source without fail. The false ‘I’ will disappear and the real ‘I’ will be realised. The former cannot exist apart from the latter.

When a man no longer confuses himself with the definition of himself that others have given him, he is at once universal and unique. He is universal by virtue of the inseparability of his organism from the cosmos. He is unique in that he is just this organism and not any stereotype of role, class, or identity assumed for the convenience of social communication. ~ Alan Watts

The individual soul being unreal, it follows that there is no perceiver of the world. This may be surprising; but it need not be so. The seer and his spectacle are inseparable; they are like the two ends of a single stick; as a stick will always have two ends, so every perception involves the two, the seer and his spectacle. The three, namely the seer, the spectacle and the relation of seeing form a triad, of which the essential element is the seeing, which becomes possible by the light of Consciousness; by that light both the seer and the seen are manifested. It is not possible to attribute reality to the seer, while denying it to the spectacle. If we accept the view that the spectacle, namely the world, is unreal in any sense, then we must also accept the view that the seer of the world is unreal in the same sense and to the same extent. The spectator is in fact an integral part of the world; both in waking and in dream the spectator and the spectacle form one single whole, appearing and vanishing together. The Sage brings home to us the spurious nature of the ego - the individual soul - by means of a parable. On the occasion of a marriage an uninvited guest, an utter stranger to both the parties, came in pretending to be an intimate friend of the bridegroom. At first the hosts, namely the bride's party, believed him and honoured him accordingly. But after a time suspicions arose and inquiries began to be made as to who he was and what right he had to come in. The two parties met and began to question each other. The impostor saw that he was sure to be exposed and treated as he deserved if he remained; so he quietly disappeared. Just like the impostor in this parable is the ego. It is neither the real Self, nor the body; so long as no inquiry is made, the ego persists and enjoys the status of the real Self; but when an inquiry is made - when the quest of the real Self is begun and persisted in - it will vanish, leaving no trace. This is exactly what we are told by the Sage in verse -25 of 'Ulladu Narpadu. - from 'Maha Yoga' (p-94,95), under the topic 'The Soul'. - Om namo Bhagavate Sri Ramanaya!

The longing of the worldly-minded for God is momentary, like a drop of water on a red-hot frying-pan. The water hisses and dries up in an instant. The attention of the worldly-minded is directed to the enjoyment of worldly pleasure. Therefore they do not feel yearning and restlessness for God. #Ramkrishna

From the book The Garland of Guru's Sayings 407. If the son of God, the jiva (ego-identified one) who has forgotten his real Nature [i.e., Self], eagerly inquires within, "Who am I that is lamenting over the miseries of life?'', he will realize his greatness, namely that he is truly One with his Father -- Self.

Self-realization is the cessation of thoughts and all mental activity. Thoughts are like bubbles upon the surface of the sea (Self). The false ego is associated with objects; the subject is alone the Reality. The world is seen by the mind’s reflected light. The moon shines by the reflected light of the Sun. When the Sun has set, the moon is useful for displaying objects. But when the Sun rises no one needs the moon, even though it is visible in the sky. So it is with mind and Heart. The mind is used for seeing objects. - Conscious Immortality

Bhagavan said, ‘The greatest scripture is the silent exposition. Only if you read this scripture will all doubts cease.’ To a complaining devotee who said, ‘I do not know where the ‘I’ is,’ Bhagavan answered by saying, ‘Be where the ‘I’ is. - LWB

"Without even knowing who we are we want to attain something else. That which we want to attain is that which we already are. The experience of any state or heavenly world that comes to us will eventually go away again. That which comes and goes is not the Self. That which is always within the experience of everyone, that alone is our real Self. That is liberation, enlightenment." ~ Ramana Maharshi

Your purpose is to be at peace, to love all beings, and to know who you are. This is the purpose of life. Slowly you will know this and get through. Q. What is peace? See things with an open heart and you will see what peace, love and beauty are and at that moment you will forget everything. Have you heard of Saint Kabir? He says, "If you keep quiet for an instant, for half an instant, for even half of a half of an instant, then the whole world will run after you." That is the attraction that you will become if you keep Quiet. You will be the most beautiful person and the whole universe will run after you to have peace of mind. You will become That and it is not difficult. ~ Sri Poonjaji ´Papaji´

"Heart" is only another name for the Self. Doubts arise only when you identify it with something tangible and physical. The Heart is not a concept nor an object for meditation, but is the seat of meditation -- it is the Self and stands alone. (Conscious Immortality)

As our physical bodies awake after dreaming and desiring, so our spiritual bodies awake after we cease to think of our physical states. In deep sleep we are devoid of desires. Similarly, in the state of renunciation, even though we are awake in our physical bodies, we have the tranquility of liberation.

TRUE FAITH AND REALIZATION

TRUE FAITH AND REALIZATION

D.: Distractions result from inherited tendencies. Can they be cast off too?

M.: Yes. Many have done so. Believe it! They did so because they believed they could. Vasanas (predispositions) can be obliterated. It is done by concentration on that which is free from vasanas and yet is their core.

D.: How long is the practice to continue?

M.: Till success is achieved and until yoga-liberation becomes permanent. Success begets success. If one distraction is conquered the next is conquered and so on, until all are finally conquered. The process is like reducing an enemy’s fort by slaying its man-power - one by one, as each issues out.

D.: What is the goal of this process?

M.: Realizing the Real.

D.: What is the nature of the Reality?

M.: (a) Existence without beginning or end - eternal. (b) Existence everywhere, endless, infinite.

(c) Existence underlying all forms, all changes, all forces, all matter and all spirit.
The many change and pass away (phenomena), whereas the One always endures (noumenon).

(d) The one displacing the triads, i.e., the knower, the knowledge and the known. The triads are only appearances in time and space, whereas the Reality lies beyond and behind them. They are like a mirage over the Reality. They are the result of delusion.

SILENT SITTING
MOOJI

Jeevanmukta

* * * He is called Bhagavan * * *

"I would like to share my thoughts.. Regarding Bhagavan
Ramana.. I don't know much... But what little I know, I would like to
share with all of you. First of all many people used to ask me. The
word Bhagavan used to be an appellation for the Supreme Deity. We say, Bhagavan Siva, Bhagavan Vishnu... How is that a mortal has been given this appellation... Not only Bhagavan Ramana, there have been others too who have been referred to as Bhagavan... Many assumed the appellation of Bhagavan. As far as Bhagavan Ramana is concerned, he never assumed anything. It was only given to him by people who knew the scriptures.

So what actually is Bhagavan?

Bhaga represents six highest qualities, attributes, which one should
possess, Consciousness. All the Mahatmas (sages) in the world,
the past and the present, they have all come out of the Supreme
Consciousness. When He is `that Supreme Consciousness', when
he is one with it, then there is nothing he lacks. He can create a
thousand universes. He can create galaxies. He is the Supreme
Controller of "aishvaryasya samagrasya'! All the powers are his!

Actually speaking, any Jeevanmukta (one who is liberated while
alive) is like a superconductor .... In quantum physics, a normal wire is so weak, that when a magnet comes near it, then the electrons in the wire run hither and thither. They cannot stand the onslaught of the photons that come from the magnet.

On the contrary, if that wire is reduced to a temperature of zero degrees Absolute, minus 273.16 degree centigrade, then it becomes a super conductor. When it becomes a super conductor, when you bring a magnet towards it even at a distance, the wire is aware. It knows pretty well that, say, 50 dynes of force is coming to attach.

And then, it has srijan-shakti, creative power. It energizes the electrons with the same 50 dynes of force. When the magnets photons come and attack the wire, the electrons rejects with equal force. None of the electrons allow the photons to pierce. The photons go around the wire, get exhausted and fall.

In the spiritual world a Jeevanmukta is a super conductor. He is a
sarvajna. He knows everything. The past, present and the future of the entire universe. In the case of a Jeevanmukta, the thought force (like the photon of magnet) can do nothing to him. It is reduced to zero, and drops exhausted. The entire world is but a thought. A Jeevanmukta reduces it to zero, and he is then in the lap of supreme consciousness.

And Bhagavan belonged to the highest category of Jeevanmukta!
Jnana Vairagyayoschaiva: Jnana is knowledge. He should have
ultimate knowledge of reality.. Words cannot express that reality. He
becomes that. We have to talk in the language of ignorance so that
other people understand. That is why we say "He possessed
knowledge". There is no question of possessing knowledge. He is
the Supreme Knowledge, where there is no knower, there is nothing
to be known...

Vairagya, we need not say! (laughs) Absolutely nothing in the
world can entice Bhagavan (Ramana)!

As he possessed all these qualities, he is called Bhagavan.

Similarly, the Supreme Deity Siva and Vishnu possess these qualities. So they are called Bhagavan. Anybody who possesses these supreme qualities has the right to be called Bhagavan.
But I stress again, He never called himself as Bhagavan. He
was not bothered about anything! Because he was the Supreme!
Whom should he impress? For whom does he have to demonstrate
his power and glory? He never bothered. It is we, who out of our
love, our devotion, that we gave him the appellation of Bhagavan and Maharshi.

Now we come to the term Maharshi...

Why is He called Maharshi?

Rishi is one who is a Mantra-Drashta. He is a seer of the Mantra...
Any Mantra would be of a particular deity. And if one contemplates the Mantra in the prescribed manner, then the deity of the Mantra Himself or Herself, would come in front of the devotee, and the meditating person would have sakshatkara, direct darshan of the deity of the Mantra. So Rishis are those who are able to see a Mantra and realize the deity underlying the mantra.

But as far as Bhagavan Ramana was concerned, he never had
any thought of any lower deity. Bhagavan Himself was the Supreme
Consciousness, Supreme Reality, which is called as Brahman or
Atman. One who has realized the Supreme Reality is called a
Maharshi. A Rishi is one who has direct vision of the deity of a Mantra.

Whereas, a Maharshi is one who does not visualize ordinary deities, but sees the Supreme, the Highest Reality, Supreme Consciousness, that we also call Chaitanya.

In what category of Jeevanmuktas can we place our Bhagavan?

A Jeevanmukta is one who is liberated while alive. You see, if it is
said that we are to get Moksha (liberation) after death, we are not
sure whether we will get it or not, whether someone is cheating us...

That is why, if we can get it while we are in this birth, while we are
alive, then we shall have the surety that we have reached.
Well, I am again using the language of ignorance, because the
question of a person saying that he has been liberated while alive
does not arise. Because, at that stage, there is nobody left to report that "I have become a Jeevanmukta!"

It is just like a drop of the ocean which has been inundated by the entire ocean! In that case, which drop is to come and tell that "I have become one with the ocean"? It is impossible! But then, certain wordings are being used in order to make a common man understand to the extent possible that which is in fact inexplicable, that which cannot be easily understood.

Normally, Jeevanmukta-s, the people who have reached the
highest stage of realization, are classified into four categories,

The first category is called as
"The Knower of Brahman" – a Brahma-Vid.
The second one is called a
"Better knower of Brahman" – a Brahma-Vid-vara.
The third one is called
"Brahma-Vid-variya", the `one who knows Brahman best'.
The fourth is
"Brahma-vid Varishta"2 - the greatest knower of Brahman!

Beyond this fourth is a category, the highest category, rarely reached. Perhaps, not more than a dozen people would have been there since the inception of the entire world, who can be said to be in this category. And Bhagavan was one of them. We would never have known that such was the case, but for the fact that Bhagavan mentioned it Himself, in a particular legal-case where he was cited as a witness. It was a case to do with Arunachaleshwara temple, where they cited Bhagavan as one who knows all the scriptures and puranas. Then the judges came to speak with Bhagavan. And they made enquiries with him, along the following lines -

"Who are you? You don't look to be a Sanyasi... But like a sanyasi you have shaved off your head. But you are not wearing ochre robes... ok, are you a Brahmachari? But we do not find the sign of a Brahmachari, the yajnopaveeta (sacred thread) on your shoulder. So then, to what category do you belong?"

Bhagavan pointed to a category beyond all these people.. Beyond
all Sanyasis... There are sanyasis like Avadhuta, Paramahamsa
and the like ... He was beyond all these ... Bhagavan said he was a
Ati-varnAshraml... One who transcends all VarnAshrama - all the
stations in life - that of a Brahmachari, he was never a householder,
nor a Sanyasi.. He never formally took Sanyasa at any time. He was
beyond all... Beyond all... Beyond all... He was even beyond the
Brahmavid-varishta... We saw the four categories - Brahma-vid,
Brahma-vid-vara, Brahma-vid-variya and Brahma-vid-varishta ... He
is beyond these four. He is a Ati-varnashrami !

Bhagavan never did any Sadhana at all. He just got Self-Abidance
in a trice! He was born as a World Teacher. He was a completely ripe Buddha.

Somebody asked Bhagavan Ramana - "If you did not do any
sadhana, then why is it that when you came to Arunachala and were at Patala Linga, you were shutting your eyes, and you were in deep Samadhi state?" Bhagavan replied that he did not know all these concepts - Samadhi, sadhana etc, at that time. He said that he came to know of these concepts much later. It was just that he did not like to see the world and so he was thus!

In fact, when the Ramana Suprabhatam was being composed by
me, one of the sentences I put in was - "taptam-tapO-hi-bhavatAvividha- sthalEshu" - (meaning) "Lord Ramana! You have performed a lot of austerities and penance in various places!" When I submitted the Suprabhata for review to the President, the only thing that he pointed out as a mistake to me was this statement. President told me - "No! You are wrong Swamiji! Bhagavan Himself has said that the day he got the death experience, he attained the final-supreme! He became the Supreme! The entire Reality was He! So there was no
question of any sadhana or any tapasya being done." I stood
corrected.

Let me explain in a different way.

Let us say that there is an exam of MBBS for qualifying as a
Doctor. A student studies hard and gets pass mark of 40%. We may say that he is a Brahma-vid, Somebody gets 60 %, first division - we may say that he is Brahma-vid-vara. Someone gets 75% - Distinction! We can say he is Brahma-vid-variya . Someone gets 100%! He can be said to be Brahma-vid-varishta!

But now let us say that the question paper had twelve questions,
and the examinee has been asked to attempt any eight questions. And there is a person who does no preparatory study who attempts the paper, and answers all twelve questions to perfection. So brilliant are the answers that he is given 150 marks out of 100! Beyond the limit!

Such a person is a Ati-varna-ashrami!

Such was Bhagavan Ramana!

Bhagavan never did any type of Sadhana. But other sages may have done different types of Sadhana. Somebody may have come up through Jnana, somebody through Bhakti, somebody though Naama Samkeertan... So, we don't know... The type of Sadhana
done by different sages may have been different... And the outward
manifestation of their state also may appear different. When a person becomes a Jeevanmukta, he or she does not have any Prarabdha left. All the karma-s go away.

The Gita says - "kshlyantE ca asya karmANi"...
The word "karmANi" is plural, and represents a minimum of three... The sequence is karma (single karma), karmaNi (two), karmANi (three or more).
Sri Krishna says "karmANi" - which means all the three types of karma - kriyamANa (also called Agami), prArabdha, sancita. All these three types of karma, which are supposed to embroil a man in Samsara - all of them go away.

Vivekachudamani and other works of Adi Shankara say that
Prarabdha karma is like an arrow that has been already shot... which has already left the bow, you cannot catch it and bring it back. You cannot burn it off while it is in mid-air. It has to find its mark - it has to exhaust itself. Prarabdha karma is like that arrow. So as such, although all the three types of karma have been destroyed when a person becomes a Jivanmukta, he may be seem to be subject to Prarabdha karma. This is from onlookers' point of view. But from the sage's point of view - it does not matter at all. Karma has no effect on him.

It is explained in Kaivalya Navaneetam, that depending on their respective Prarabdha, the state of Self-Abidance of different sages appears to be different to the onlooker - as Brahmavid, Brahmavid-vara, Brahmavid-variya or Brahmavid-varishta.
And beyond these four is ati-varnAshramI, a Sastraic state of unattachment to anything in life and beyond all restrictions.... Bhagavan Ramana was an ati-varNAshraml .

Bhagavan himself has mentioned a few sages as ati-varNAshraml.
He has mentioned Vamadeva. The scriptures say that Vamadeva attained enlightenment even when he was in his mother's womb. Vamadeva proclaims in the womb - "aham manurabhavam, suryascha!" - "It is I who became Manu. I am the Sun too". Even in the womb, he became one with All. He was enlightened.

The next sage that Bhagavan mentioned as an ati-varNAshraml
was Sukadeva. Sukadeva was the son of vyasa. He remained in the womb and refused to come out for sixteen years. He said -
so 'ham' vasann api vibho bahu-duh?kha-vasam'
garbhan na nirjigamis?e bahir andha-kupe
yatropayatam upasarpati deva-maya
mithya matir yad-anu sam'sr?ti-cakram etat
"Therefore, my Lord, although I am living in much misery, I do not
wish to leave my mother's abdomen to fall again into the blind well (of worldly life). Your deva-maya, at once captures the newly born child, and immediately false identification, which is the beginning of the cycle of continual birth and death, begins."
Sukadeva did not want to fall into the bondage of false bodily
identification. So, after cultivating Self-Knowledge within the womb of his mother, he came out at the end of sixteen years. And no sooner he came out , he renounced all, and immediately left home.
Sukadeva did not undertake sanyasa by following any formal rites.
He was a born renunciate . An ati-varNAshraml is one who has
transcended all Samskara - religious rites associated with various
stages and events in a man 's life.

So was Jadabharata .
In one of his lives , he became very attached to a deer, and that cost him dearly ! He had to be born as a deer. After that birth , he was born with complete memory of his previous births. He did not get entangled in any attachment . He did not speak at all. When
he was invested with upanayana , he did not chant the Gayatri mantra. He was completely indifferent and silent as always . His father thought he was a dud. He was not a dud. He was an ati-varNAshraml.

Like the above sages , there was Sadasiva Brahmendra, whose
Samadhi is in Nerur. He was an avadhUta . He took no formal Sanyasa. He lived in Supreme Bliss of Self-Abidance. He became mad in that Super-Conscious state. It was the divine madness of an ati-Ashraml.

Bhagavan Ramana too, like Sukadeva, realized His supreme state,
once and for all time, when he was sixteen , and he left for Arunachala forthwith . He was the greatest of renunciates , although he did not undergo any formal Sanyasa samskara.

So, who is an ati-varNAshraml ?
The characteristics of an atyAshraml or an ati-varNAshraml have been given in sUta-samhita.
The related Suta Samhita verses are also quoted in Vidyaranya's
"Jeevan-mukti-viveka ". One of the first attributes listed is that one who is an ati-varNAshraml is - na kasyApi bhavEcchishyO- he will not become a disciple of any Guru . It further states - "ati varnAshraml sAkshAd gurUNAm gururucyatE" -An ati-varNAshraml is indeed known as the Guru of Guru-s . He knows that varnA, Ashrama and the like are all a web of illusion woven around the body , and that the world itself is an illusory projection in his own Self . "AtmAnam Ishvaram veda, sO ati varNAshraml bhavEt" - The Ati Varnashrami knows himself as God.

He who has realized by his own experience , and by the authority of
Vedanta , his own Self as peerless , unconditioned , unaffected , ever pure, beyond illusion , Being and Consciousness in One, and Supremely Immortal - is a true ati varNAshraml.

In every aspect as described by the scriptures, Bhagavan Ramana
was an ati varNAshraml.

Bhagavan was an ati-varNAshrami, who had no guru in this birth.
But when somebody questioned Bhagavan about it, he quipped
back asking ` How do you know I did not have a Guru in my previous birth ?" Whatever it may be , it is clear that he was born as a `ripe fruit', who had already completed all spiritual learning before this birth. He was an Enlightened Master, even when he was born . That is why it took him only a trice to show that to the world , when he had what is called his 'death experience'. But he was always THAT, since his birth. But he showed that only when the time was ripe for him to come away to Tiruvannamalai . Until that time, he kept it hidden.

As I had mentioned , Vamadeva, Sukadeva, Jadabharatha were all
ati-varNAshrami . As was Sadasiva Brahmendra , who was ' mad with super-consciousness'. That is what one has to be . One has to become 'mad'... i.e . one has to have devotion , faith, and love , to the point of utter distraction ... Then only one can have an idea of that stage, of a Jeevanmukta...

One more point I would like to mention... Bhagavan not only gave
spiritual support to one and all, he also provided worldly protection to all. And this has continued even after he relinquished his body. The Mundakopanishad says - `tasmAd Atmajnam dryarcayEt bhUtikAmah' - "Therefore, one who wishes to have prosperity should worship the knower of the Self." You just go to Him. That is sufficient. He will know what is wanted. And automatically your needs are fulfilled. He never does anything. But it happens. That is the thing! Let me tell you one instance.

Long back, perhaps twenty or twenty five years back, there
was lady who came to the Ashrama. She came here, and was staying in the Bose compound, perhaps, for some time. Her life was in a great crisis. She did not know what to do. She had no money. She was in dire, desperate circumstances. She just came here. Every day, morning and evening, she was making rounds of Bhagavan's Samadhi. She never spoke about her problem to anybody.

At that time, Sri TN Venkataraman (who later embraced Sanyasa
and had the name Swami Ramanananda) happened to notice her. He was the President of the Ashrama, a capacity that he served for almost forty six years. Now, this lady had never spoken to him, nor even met him. But he saw her making the rounds of Samadhi, day after day. Suddenly one day, he took the Prasada of Bhagavan, called her, gave it to her, saying "Don't worry! All your problems will be solved." This was really surprising for her. Then, within a matter of a year, matters proceeded by themselves, and she was out of her crisis, and also became well off materially. She is now in a very affluent condition. She has a house here in Tiruvannamalai and also in another city, where she stays. She often comes here. This is a story that I have heard from her mouth. Thus, Bhagavan, even though we do not express our desires for the material side, when you come here, when you completely surrender yourself to
the Lord, to Bhagavan Ramana, then, well, everything gets "very nicely settled" - to your utmost satisfaction! What else should I say!

Dr Sarada: Swamiji , please tell us a little about Mother Azhagamma.
Something about Mother Azhagamma 's Ashtottram.
(Swamiji has composed an Ashtottram on Mother Azhagamma. He
has also composed the "Ramana Suprabhatam" )

Swamiji replies...
"You see ... It was not written by me .... It was written by Bhagavan
Himself ... That is why I do not remember a single sentence of the Ashtottram . Same thing with Ramana Suprabhatam . I never remembered a single verse of that. Normally, when someone composes a work, they would remember at least a bit
of it. I did not remember anything at all of it . Even at that time . The very instant after writing Ramana Suprabhatam , I couldn't remember even one Shloka . I had to read it. This is a fact . When I had been asked to write something about Bhagavan for a souvenir, I did not know what to write. I was here , but I did not know anything much about Bhagavan. Yes, I had taken some classes on Bhagavan's treatise "Upadesha Saram" earlier. That was back in 1993 , when I had come for the first time to Athithi Ashram . I took three sets of classes for three groups of
people . Apart from that my knowledge about Bhagavan was very, very, scarce.

Then , Natesa Iyer, the disciple of our Ganapathi Muni, came and
spoke to me. He told me - "Swamiji! You should have no anxiety writing about Bhagavan ! What are you worried about?" I told him my apprehension. But he persisted and said "Why don't you write a
Suprabhatam for Bhagavan ?" I replied saying that for writing the
Suprabhatam I should know the life history of Bhagavan, of which I had no knowledge at all. For the next two and a half hours , Natesa lyer gave me a beautiful summary of Bhagavan's life. That night, I wrote 78 shlokas of Suprabhatam . The hand never stopped even for one minute , to think what I am writing. I never thought . It went on. I was equally surprised, like anyone else. That is all . What can I say about it...

About Mother Azhagamma , I can only say this. Whoever is the
mother of a great saint , must be equally great. Because , they have borne the sage in their womb. And such pure Consciousness cannot be contained in a worldly vessel . A mother who has borne Bhagavan Ramana in her womb , outwardly you may think that she evolved because Bhagavan taught her, gave her upadesha etc. What I would say is that perhaps the entire thing was a drama . She was as much evolved... She was a Brahma Jnani ... Outwardly the drama had to continue. That is what I think. Her greatness is in no way less than Bhagavan!

Hari Om!

Ego is a powerful elephant

THE EGO IS A POWERFUL ELEPHANT

D: How is the Guru found?

M: God, who is immanent, in His grace takes pity on
the loving devotee and manifests Himself according
to the devotee’s development. The devotee thinks
that He is a man and expects a relationship as
between two physical bodies. But the Guru, who is
God or the Self incarnate, works from within, helps
the man to see the error of his ways and guides him
in the right path until he realizes the Self within.

D: What should the devotee do then?

M: He has only to act up to the words of the Master
and work within. The Master is both ‘within’ and
‘without’, so He creates conditions to drive you
inward and at the same time prepares the ‘interior’
to drag you to the Centre. Thus He gives a push
from ‘without’ and exerts a pull from ‘within’, so
that you may be fixed at the Centre.

You think that the world can be conquered by your own
efforts. When you are frustrated externally and are
driven inwards, you feel ‘Oh! there is a Power higher
than man!’

The ego is like a very powerful elephant which cannot be
brought under control by any less powerful than a
lion, which, in this instance, is no other than the
Guru, whose very look makes the elephant-like ego
tremble and die.

You will know in due course that your glory lies where
you cease to exist. In order to gain that state, you
should surrender yourself. Then the Master sees that
you are in a fit state to receive guidance, and He
guides you.

D: How can the silence of the Guru, who gives no
initiation nor does any other tangible act, be more
powerful than His word etc.? How is such silence
better than the study of scriptures?

M: Silence is the most potent form of work. However
vast and emphatic the scriptures may be, they fail in
their effect. The Guru is quiet and Grace prevails in
all. This silence is vaster and more emphatic
than all the scriptures put together.

D: But can the devotee obtain happiness?

M: The devotee surrenders himself to the Master and it
means that there is no vestige of individuality retained
by him. If the surrender is complete, all sense of self
is lost, and then there can be no misery or sorrow.
The eternal Being is nothing but happiness. That comes
as a revelation.

From Maharshi’s Gospel

Grace Silence

Silence...

The highest form of grace is silence...
It is also the highest spiritual instruction....
All other modes of instruction are
derived from silence and
are therefore secondary....
Silence is the primary form....
If the guru is silent the seeker's mind
get purified by itself....

Silence

Silence....

Silence of a realized person is
most powerful....
He sends out waves of spiritual influence
which draw many people towards him....
Yet he may sit in a cave and
maintain complete silence....

Forget about past

Forget about the past. Forget about people who have hurt you before. Drop everything, let it go. Let go of everything, everything. Hold on to nothing. Stand naked in the world without a foundation, with nothing to take refuge in. Then you'll be cleansed completely, then you'll become the ascended Master. But when you take refuge in this and you take refuge in that, this keeps you from your real Self.

As an example: In buddhism you learn to take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the sangha and so forth. Yet when you do this you become an idiot, for you're holding on to something. You become dull, insensitive. Hold on to nothing. Yet most of us have fear. We're afraid to do this because we won't know what will happen to us. We feel secure when we take refuge in something. The security is your downfall. As long as you feel secure you will never grow. It's like having money in the bank. You're afraid to spend it. You're afraid to be without an account. For you think this is your nest egg, you hoard it. You always look at the balance to see what you have. This keeps you from advancing spiritually.

Remember the Israelites of old. When they were in the desert for forty years they were told not to save any manna. So they would throw away the extra manna they had, not to save anything, and new manna was provided for them daily. This is the meaning. As long as you have something to hold onto, something to save you from something, you will never become free and realized. Most of us are afraid of having nothing. Yet nothing is absolute reality. Nothing is your savior. Nothing is reality. Something on the other hand, is your enemy. Something will always hold you back.

I'm not saying you have to give your possessions away;  I'm saying possess all you will but don't be possessed by your possessions. Do not believe that what you earn will be your security, it never works out this way. Your security is your Self, the faith that you have, the power that you have, the love that you have, this is your security, nothing else. Yet most of us never live this way for we have been brought up to believe that we have to have something. For if we feel that we have nothing, we haven't made it in this world and we become depressed, we compare ourselves with others.

Yet every great spiritual Master has lived from day to day, never caring at all what is going to happen the next day. But you say, "How can we do such a thing in the West?" You say, "This is for monks, nuns. For people who have given up this world." On the contrary, you'll be happier than you have ever been in your life when you stop worrying about your possessions, what you should have, what you shouldn't have, for you are not your possessions nor are you your body. It is only the mind that thinks these things.

Why not surrender right now to the power which knows the way. Make up your mind this night that you're going to give up everything, mentally. You're going to let go of the past, the future, the present, you're doing this right now this minute. You're letting go of all your fears, all of your frustrations, all of your thinking. You are no longer concerned what's going to happen to you tomorrow, where you will be, where you won't be. You're not worried about a job, income, people places and things, you have found freedom, absolute freedom.

This freedom will take care of you, will guide you, listen to it closely it'll tell you what to do at every turn. This freedom is really you.
