It is fallacious to think that there is an individual self which functions through the body and the mind. The ‘me’ as an individual self is merely a mental modification, and there is no such thing as a mind apart from thought. When the source of thought is probed continuously as it arises, it is revealed that there is no such thing as mind or an individual behind it.

Nisargadatta.:

The person may be conscious, 

but is not aware of being conscious. 

It is completely identified with what 

it thinks and feels and experiences. 

The darkness that is in it is of its own creation. 

When the darkness is questioned, it dissolves. 

The desire to question is planted by the Guru. 

In other words, the difference between 

the person and the witness is as 

between not knowing and knowing oneself. 

The world seen in consciousness 

is to be of the nature of consciousness, 

when there is harmony (sattva); 

but when activity and passivity (rajas and tamas) appear, 

they obscure and distort and you see the false as real.

Distrust your mind and go beyond. Then you will find the direct experience of being, knowing and loving. 

There are many starting points - they all lead to the same goal. You may begin with selfless work, abandoning the fruits of action; you may then give up thinking and end in giving up all desires. 

Here, giving up is the operational factor. Or you may not bother about any thing you want, or think, or do, and just stay in the thought and feeling "I am", focusing "I am" firmly in your mind. All kinds of experience may come to you - remain unmoved in the knowledge that all perceivable is transient and only the "I am" endures.

सामान्यतया ऊर्जा तुमसे दूर जा रही है वस्तुओं की तरफ, लक्ष्यों की तरफ, दुनिया में। 

ऊर्जा तुमसे दूर जा रही है, इसलिए तुम खालीपन महसूस करते हो। ऊर्जा दूर चली जाती है, फिर कभी वापस नहीं आती; तुम ऊर्जा फेंकते चले जाते हो। बाद में तुम लुटे-लुटे और निराश महसूस करते हो। कुछ भी वापस नहीं आता। तुरंत ही तुम एक खालीपन महसूस करते हो। ऊर्जा हर दिन बस बाहर की ओर बह रही है– और फिर मृत्यु आ जाती है। मृत्यु और कुछ नहीं बल्कि इस बात की सूचक है कि तुम शक्तिहीन हो चुके हो और थक चुके हो।’

इसे समझना जीवन में सबसे बड़ा चमत्कार है, और ऊर्जा को वापस घर की तरफ मोड़ना। यह भीतर की ओर मुड़ना है। ऐसा नहीं कि सब छोड़ कर तुम दुनिया से भाग जाते हो। तुम दुनिया में रहते हो– कुछ भी छोड़ने या कहीं ओर जाने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। तुम दुनिया में रहते हो, परंतु पूरी तरह एक अलग तरीके से। अब तुम दुनिया में रहते हो परंतु तुम अपने आप में केंद्रित बने रहते हो; तुम्हारी ऊर्जा तुम पर वापस लौटती रहती है।

‘अब तुम बहिर्मुखी नहीं रहते: तुम अंतर्मुखी हो जाते हो। निश्चित ही तुम एक ऊर्जा-कुंड बन जाते हो, एक जलाशय, और ऊर्जा है प्रसन्नता, विशुद्ध आनंद। वहां सिर्फ ऊर्जा होती है, लबालब बहती हुई, और तुम आनंदित होते हो, और उसे बांट सकते हो, और प्रेम में तुम उसे दे सकते हो।’

‘जहां भी तुम जाते हो, जो भी तुम करते हो, हमेशा उसे भीतरी प्रकाश में करना जागरूकता के साथ। ध्यान इसी सबके लिए ही है– ज्यादा होशपूर्ण बनने के लिए। इसी जीवन को जीना है, बस अपने होश को बदल देना है– इसे ज्यादा प्रगाढ़ बनाना है। वही भोजन करना है, उसी रास्ते पर चलना है, उसी घर में रहना है, उसी स्त्री और उसी बच्चे के साथ, परंतु भीतर बिलकुल अलग हो जाना है। होशपूर्ण बन जाना है! उसी रास्ते पर चलो, परंतु होश के साथ। अगर तुम होशपूर्ण हो जाओ, अचानक वही रास्ता वही नहीं रहता, क्योंकि तुम वही नहीं हो। अगर तुम होशपूर्ण हो जाते हो, वही खाना वही नहीं रहता, क्योंकि तुम वही नहीं रहते, वही स्त्री वही नहीं रहती, क्योंकि तुम वही नहीं हो। तुम्हारे भीतरी परिवर्तन से सब-कुछ बदल जाता है।’

‘अगर कोई अपने भीतर को बदल लेता है, तो उसका बाहर पूरी तरह से बदल जाता है। यही है संसार की मेरी परिभाषा–तुम निश्चित रूप से एक गहरे भीतरी अंधकार में जी रहे होओगे, इसलिए ही संसार है। अगर तुम अपने भीतर के दीपक को प्रकाशित कर लो, अचानक संसार विदा हो जाता है, और वहां केवल परमात्मा रह जाता है। सब-कुछ तुम्हारे भीतर की जागरूकता एवं बेहोशी पर निर्भर करता है। केवल वही एक बदलाव, वही एक परिवर्तन, वही एक क्रांति है, जिसे किया जाना है।’

Sat Sang means association with Sat or Reality. One who knows or has realized Sat is also regarded as Sat. Such association is absolutely necessary for all. 

Sankara has said, 

“In all the three worlds there is no boat like sat sang to carry one safely across the ocean of births and deaths.”

Guru not being physical, His contact will continue after His form vanishes. If one Jnani exists in the world, His influence 

will be felt by or benefit all people in the world, and not simply His immediate disciples. 

As described in Vedanta Chudamani, 

all the people in the world can be put under four categories: 

The Guru’s disciples, bhaktas, those who are indifferent to Him and those who are hostile to Him. All these will be benefited 

by the existence of the Jnani - each in his own way and to various degrees.

"Everyone is God, 

but we do not see it unless we see God within ourselves. 

If you first see God in yourself you will see him in the animals, birds, rocks.

Surrender to God and keep Quiet and he will take your responsibilities. 

As long as you take your responsibilities on your own head,
