Q: What is the ego-self ? How is it related to the real Self ?
Sri Ramana Maharshi :
The ego-Self appears and disappears and is transitory, whereas the real Self is permanent.
Though you are actually the true Self you wrongly identify the real Self with the ego-self.

Q: How does the mistake come about?
Sri Ramana Maharshi : See if it has come about.

Q: One has to sublimate the ego-self into the true Self.
Sri Ramana Maharshi : The ego-self does not exist at all.

Q: Why does it give us trouble?
Sri Ramana Maharshi : To whom is the trouble ?
The trouble also is imagined.
Trouble and pleasure are only for the ego.

Q: Why is the world so wrapped up in ignorance?
Sri Ramana Maharshi :
Take care of yourself.
Let the world take care of itself.
See your Self.
If you are the body there is the gross world also.
If you are spirit all is spirit alone.

Q: It will hold good for the individual, but what of the rest?
Sri Ramana Maharshi : Do it first and then see if the question arises afterwards.

Q: Is there avidya [ignorance]?
Sri Ramana Maharshi : For whom is it?

Q: For the ego-self.
Sri Ramana Maharshi : Yes, for the ego.
Remove the ego and avidya is gone.
Look for it, the ego vanishes and the real Self alone remains.
The ego professing avidya is not to be seen.
There is no avidya in reality.
All sastras [scriptures] are meant to disprove the existence of avidya.

Q : Should I abide as the pure “I" and have faith that purity will come?

Sri Papaji :

Don't waste your time in the purity of mind
because mind cannot be pure.

Even the desire to be pure is the trick of the mind.

You will spend many lives purifying the mind,
but it will never be pure.

Look at the story of Vishwamitra and Manika.
After purifying his mind for 10,000 years
he still falls for her instantly.

It is better to just allow your desires to arise and
not let them touch you.

Let them arise and let them be fullfilled.

You simply stay Quiet.

Don't try to become anything,
don't go anywhere
and
don't do anything
and
don't undo anything.

Find the source of these concepts and stay there.

This is bliss, nothing else.

This knowledge is bliss.

From the book The Garland of Guru's Sayings

584. That which exists [sat] itself is consciousness [chit]. The consciousness itself is bliss [ananda]. Deriving pleasure from other things is mere delusion [that is, the pleasure we suppose we derive from other things is illusory, false]. Tell me, except in the clear and real Self-existence, can there be real happiness in the imaginary sense-objects?

"Our life is whatever we are encountering right now,
and our practice is shikantaza,
which is literally 'just sitting.'

More broadly it means to put our energy into settling everything in our world here and now, where we really live."

 "Who is journeying for freedom?
The one who is already free.

Just get rid of the concept, ‘I am the body, separate from the source.’
You return to what you always were."
