God has spun this eventful cosmic play on the stage of time to entertain us, but we take the shadows as serious realities! There is only one Serious Reality - and that is God.

being

When you are established in consciousness,
you don’t need to pick your company anymore.
Wherever you go, a garden will grow.
What does it mean?
It means wherever you go,
somehow without any effort on your part,
you will be meeting the right kind of beings,
even if they appear, initially, to be the wrong ones.
Your being will convert them into the right ones.

Seer God

"I cannot show you God or enable you to see God because God is not an object that can be seen. God is the subject. He is the seer. Don't concern yourself with objects of senses. Find out who the seer is. You can't see God because you are God."

sannyasins

my sannyasins are in the world,
and I have told them to mix with the world
so that they can spread the truth more easily.

You are fortunate -- just our people,
a small minority in the world of five billion people,
is enough to create a wildfire.

But don't be in a hurry and don't be impatient.
And there is no need ever to be in a state of losing hope.

Truth is intrinsically undefeatable,
 intrinsically impossible to defeat.

It may take time, but there is no scarcity of time.

And there is no need that the revolution
should happen before our eyes.

It is contentment enough that you were part of a
 movement that changed the world,
that you played your role in favor of truth,
that you will be part of the victory
that is going to happen ultimately.

There is going to come a time when you will say,
I once believed that everyone had to like me,
but now this belief is no more.
I once believed I had to be the best person I could be
in order to be free, but no more.
I once believed that I had to first do everything
I needed to do in the world,
and only when I had done that and I was satisfied
could I turn my attention to Self-discovery.
I once believed that.
I once believed that it was up to someone else
to make me happy.
That seems a long time ago.
I once believed that I was not worthy,
but I see now that was untrue.
I once believed I was not ready,
but that was just another idea.
I once believed that I had to practise more,
meditate longer, be more sincere,
but I saw such things are not required.
Life in itself is neither strenuous nor cruel.
I believed so many things that were untrue.
Then I woke up to the fact that nothing,
apart from misconceptions, veils
the natural freedom I Am.

But what is there to enjoy in the world? 'Woman and gold'? That is only a momentary pleasure. One moment it exists and the next moment it disappears.

The world is like an overcast sky that steadily pours down rain: the face of the sun is seldom seen. There is mostly suffering in the world. On account of the cloud of 'woman and gold' one cannot see the sun. Some people ask me: 'Sir, why has God created such a world? Is there no way out for us?' I say to them: 'Why shouldn't there be a way out? Take shelter with God and pray to Him with a yearning heart for a favourable wind, that you may have things in your favour. If you call on Him with yearning. He will surely listen to you.'

The difficulty is that a man thinks
he is the doer; it is a mistake.
It is the higher power which does everything and man is only a tool.
If he accepts that position
he is free from trouble
Otherwise he courts it.

ЁЯМ║ A certain well-known rich man of Calcutta visited Sri Ramakrishna and in the course of conversation with him had recourse to many a tortuous argument. Sri Ramakrishna said: "What is the good of useless discussion? Go on calling on Him with a simple and believing heart and that will do you good". This advice was not taken in good part by the arrogant visitor, who made the rude remark: "Have you yourself been able to know everything?" Sri Ramakrishna with folded hands and great humility replied: “True, I have not been able to know anything, but then a broomstick, though unclean itself, will cleanse the place it sweeps".

freedom

Why not surrender right now to the power which knows the way. Make up your mind this night that you're going to give up everything, mentally. You're going to let go of the past, the future, the present, you're doing this right now this minute. You're letting go of all your fears, all of your frustrations, all of your thinking. You are no longer concerned what's going to happen to you tomorrow, where you will be, where you won't be. You're not worried about a job, income, people places and things, you have found freedom, absolute freedom.

This freedom will take care of you, will guide you, listen to it closely it'll tell you what to do at every turn. This freedom is really you.

Talk 140.

D.: What is reality?

M.: Reality must be always real.
It is not with forms and names.
That which underlies these is the Reality.
It underlies limitations, being itself limitless. It is not bound.
It underlies unrealities, itself being real. Reality is that which is.
It is as it is.
It transcends speech, beyond the expressions, e.g., existence, non-existence, etc.

Talk 141.

The same gentleman later, after quoting a verse from Kaivalya, asked:
“Can jnana be lost after being once attained?”

M.: Jnana, once revealed, takes time to steady itself. The Self is certainly within the direct experience of everyone, but not as one imagines it to be. It is only as it is.
This Experience is samadhi.

Just as fire remains without scorching against incantations or other devices but
scorches otherwise, so also the Self remains veiled by vasanas and reveals itself when there are no vasanas.

Owing to the fluctuation of the vasanas, jnana takes time to steady itself. Unsteady jnana is not enough to check rebirths. Jnana cannot remain unshaken side by
side with vasanas. True, that in the proximity of a great master, the vasanas will cease to be active, the mind becomes still and samadhi results, similar to fire not scorching because of other devices. Thus
the disciple gains true knowledge and right experience in the presence of the master. To remain unshaken in it further efforts are necessary.
He will know it to be his real Being and thus be liberated even while alive.

Samadhi with closed eyes is certainly good, but one must go further until it is realised that actionlessness and action are not hostile to each other. Fear of loss of samadhi while one is active is the sign
of ignorance. Samadhi must be the natural life of everyone.

There is a state beyond our efforts or effortlessness. Until it is realised effort is necessary. After tasting such Bliss, even once one will repeatedly try to regain it. Having once experienced the Bliss of Peace no one would like to be out of it or engaged himself otherwise.

It is as difficult for a Jnani to engage in thoughts as it is for an ajnani to be free from thought.

The common man says that he does not know himself; he thinks many thoughts and cannot remain without thinking.
Any kind of activity does not affect a Jnani; his mind remains ever in eternal Peace.

Raj yog

ЁЯСг Begin with your toes and think of each part of your body as perfect; picture it so in your mind, touching each part if you prefer to do so. Pass upward bit by bit until you reach the head, thinking of each as perfect, lacking nothing. Then think of the whole as perfect, an instrument, given to you by God to enable you to attain Truth; the vessel, in which you are to cross the ocean and reach the shores of Eternal Truth. When this has been done, take a long breath through both nostrils, throw it out again, and then hold it out as long as you comfortably can. Take four such breaths, then breathe naturally and pray for illumination: "I meditate on the Glory of that Being, who created this Universe; may He illuminate my mind". Sit and meditate on this ten or fifteen minutes.

longing

ЁЯМУ Sri Ramakrishna (to the devotees): “God’s will is both in worldliness and freedom. It is He, who has kept you unconscious in worldly life. And again, at His will, when He calls you, you will be liberated.

The child has gone out to play – its mother will call at meal-time.

He will give you the company of sadhus, when he wants to grant you Liberation. And He will also give you the yearning to attain Him”.

A neighbour: “Sir, what kind of yearning?”

Sri Ramakrishna: “The yearning that you feel, when you lose a job – the way you go from office to office every day to enquire: “Sir, is there a vacancy?”

Yearning brings restlessness: how can I attain God?

When a dandy twirls his mustache up on the sides, sits cross-legged, and chews betel-leaf nonchalantly, he can’t attain God”.

Neighbour: “Can you develop such longing by keeping the company of holy people?”

Sri Ramakrishna: “Yes, you can. But a hypocrite can’t attain such yearning. A kamandalu (a sannyasin’s water pot made of bitter gourd) is with the sadhu all the time that he is visiting the four centres of pilgrimage, but it remains as bitter as it was before”.

Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna

bliss

We have not got to attain bliss. We are bliss. Bliss is another name for us. It is our nature. All that we have to do is to turn the mind, draw it from the sense objects every time it goes towards them, and fix it in the Self .

self

Visitor:
“When a man Realises The Self,
... What will he see?”

Bhagavan:
“There is no seeing.
... 'Seeing', is only 'Being'.

'The State Of Self-Realization' - as we call IT, is not attaining something new, or reaching some goal, which is far away, but simply Being that which 'You' always ARE, and which 'You' always have been.

All that is needed is that you give up your realization of 'the not-true' - as True.

All of us are realizing, i.e.; regarding 'as Real' - that which is 'Not Real'.

We have only to give up this practice, on our part. Then we shall Realize The Self, as The Self - or in other words, ‘BE' The Self.

At one stage, one would laugh at oneself; that one tried to discover The Self, which is so Self-Evident.

So, what can we say to this question?

That stage, Transcends 'the seer and the seen'.
... There is 'no seer' there, 'to see' anything;

'The seer' - who is 'seeing' all this, now ceases to exist, and The Self Alone remains.”

Man of knowledge

When a man attains the Knowledge of Brahman he shows certain characteristics. The Bhagavata describes four of them: the state of a child, of an inert thing, of a madman, and of a ghoul. Sometimes the knower of Brahman acts like a five-year-old child. Sometimes he acts like a madman. Sometimes he remains like an inert thing. In this state he cannot work; he renounces all action. You may say that jnanis like Janaka were active. The truth is that people in olden times gave responsibility to their subordinate officers and thus freed themselves from worry. Further, at that time men possessed intense faith.

work

There is no harm in doing work after the attainment of bhakti. But it is very hard. One needs intense tapasya.

It is God who does everything. We are His instruments. Some Sikhs said to me in front of the Kali temple, 'God is compassionate.' I said, 'To whom is He compassionate?' 'Why, revered sir, to all of us', said the Sikhs. I said: 'We are His children. Does compassion to one's own children mean much? A father must look after his children; or do you expect the people of the neighbourhood to bring them up?' Well, won't those who say that God is compassionate ever understand that we are God's children and not someone else's?

longing realization

"If the longing is there, Realization will be forced on you even if you do not want it...sadhanas [spiritual practices] are needed so long as one has not realized it. They are for putting an end to obstacles. Finally, there comes a stage when a person feels helpless notwithstanding the sadhanas. He is unable to pursue the much-cherished sadhana, also. It is then that God's Power is realized. The Self reveals itself."

self

You are looking for satisfaction in the outside world because you think that all these objects you see in front of you are real.

They are not. The Reality is the substratum in which they all appear. This is what you should be seeking, instead of looking for external gods in different pilgrimage places.

An elephant is made out of wood. If we see it as wood, it is wood. But if we get caught up in the name and form, we will see only an elephant and forget that its underlying nature is wood.

All is your own Self. This form is different; that form is different. This is more powerful; this is worse. These are all judgments you make when you see separate objects instead of having the true vision that all is an undifferentiated oneness.

There may be different varieties of light bulbs, but the current that activates and sustains them is the same. You must learn to become one with this activating current, the unmanifest Self, and not get caught up in all the names and forms that appear in IT.

ego

TALK 28

Ego’s perfection is suddenly broken at a point and a want is felt giving rise to a desire to get something or do something. When that want is cured by the fulfilment of that desire, the ego is happy and the original perfection is restored. Therefore happiness may be said to be our natural condition or nature. Pleasure and pain are relative and refer to our finite state, with progress by satisfaction of want. If relative progress is stopped and the soul merges into Brahman - of the nature of perfect peace - that soul ceases to have relative, temporary pleasure and enjoys perfect peace - Bliss. Hence Self-Realisation is Bliss; it is realizing the Self as the limitless spiritual eye (jnana dristi) and not clairvoyance; it is the highest self-surrender. Samsara (the world-cycle) is sorrow.

enlightment

I don't want you to be a Buddha tomorrow, there is no need to wait. The Buddha is your nature. All that is needed is to be acquainted with it. You are buddhas - maybe unaware of the fact, maybe fast asleep, but that makes no difference. A buddha asleep is still a buddha. A buddha unaware of his own buddhahood is still a buddha. The difference between one who is enlightened and one who is ignorant is not in being, but only in knowing. It is just as if somebody is asleep and you are awake; being is the same. The purpose of all the meditations is to wake you up, to pull you out of your desires and dreams of worldly things so that you can see who you are. Once you have seen you cannot go back into your dreaming state again. Just as the fallen flower from the tree cannot jump back to the branch again.

life

In life pleasant and unpleasant situations come but one who had an iota of witness consciousness will not be disturbed.

- Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar.

death

Only my people celebrate death; otherwise everywhere it is a mourning.

“Everywhere it has to be a mourning, because a life unfulfilled, unlived, a wastage…. What is there to celebrate?“But if your life has been of love, of creativity, of sharing, of joy, if you have not left any part of your being unlived, your death needs to be a ceremony, a festival.

“As yet, men have not learned to consecrate the fairest festivals.I shall show you the consummating death, which shall be a spur and a promise to the living.

The man consummating his life dies his death triumphantly.“Death should be a triumph, a victory, a coming home. But for that you have to transform your whole life. You have to live differently – not like a Christian or a Hindu or a Mohammedan – but like a natural human being, without any fear and without any greed….

“It is a well-known fact in the East that most great sages announce their death beforehand, and people have misunderstood it: people think that they are predicting, but it is not prediction. They know that they have come to fulfilment and there is no more in life and there is no more to be discovered – their journey is complete….

“Zarathustra is incomparable in many of his insights. This can be one of the greatest lessons: that if you want a glorious death, not an ugly and contemptible one, you should start living from this very moment. Totality should be your concern: living totally, burning your torch of life from both ends together. By the time you feel fulfilled, you will be able to die totally. You will not cling to life.

“I have seen many people die. They die like beggars, clinging; they don’t want to die because they have not lived yet, and death has come. But when there was life, they wasted it. Now that death has knocked on their doors they have become aware of the wastage of life.

“But a man who has lived totally will open the doors, will welcome death, because death is not your enemy. It is simply a change of house: from one body into another, from one form into another or, ultimately, from form to the formless life that surrounds the earth. A religious man not only lives religiously, he dies religiously. A man of art lives artfully, and lives not only artfully, but dies too with great art.

no desire

The non-dual experience will only be attained by those who have completely given up desires. For those with desires, it is far, far away. Hence it is proper for those with desires to direct their desires towards God, who is desireless, so that through desire for God the desires that arise through the delusion that objects exist and are different from oneself will become extinct.

enlightment

“When you wake up from your story, guess what you realize about everybody else? They are not their story. They are spirit, too. And that spirit is totally independent of their story and your story about them. So you not only lose your center, you lose their center, that box you would put them in. You see they are the same. This is why it is said that enlightenment is never a personal matter. You can’t realize you are enlightened and still believe that others aren’t. You can’t see your true nature without seeing the true nature of everything. It is literally impossible. This is a tremendous act of compassion, an act of love.”

Absolute presence

Absolute Presence is the ubiquitous eye, that measures the universe.
It is the center of infinity, that sees everything and yet does not see, because it is seeing itself.

***********

It is not the present, which is fleeting past us with sickening speed.
The present moment is indeed eternal.
It is our imperfect perception that creates the horizontal succession in time.
Sequential duration is a consequence of the single-track verbalization of our split-mind, which does not grasp the outer world instantaneously, but interprets it perversely, by extracting bits and pieces and calling them things and events.

*** Deham Naham Koham Sohum ***

Once G.V. Subbaramaiah, had brought his two young daughters, Lalita and Indra, to the Asramam. The younger one Indra, who was hardly 5 years old was quite mischievous. In the Hall, some devotees at that time were asking Bhagavan Ramana, how to remain still [to remain Summa], amidst various work in the world.

Bhagavan Ramana said that it is all in the mind. If the mind could be quelled and made to stay in the Self, within, any amount of work could be done, without desire and doer-ship.

Meantime, Indra, was moving here and there in the Hall. She was pulling out books, Bhagavan Ramana's stick, alms-bowl, the time-piece near the sofa etc.,

Bhagavan Ramana asked: "Amma, what are you doing?"

Indra replied: " I am not doing anything.
I am remaining Summa.( I am still)"

Everyone laughed.

Bhagavan Ramana also laughed and said:
"See, this is how the worldly work should be performed !,
She is doing some work there but she says I am still.
This is the essence of atma vichara( Self enquiry).
One can do any work and still be still in mind.

During the same trip, one day Indra took out a Sanskrit book and was seeing it. She only understands Telugu. So she went to Bhagavan Ramana, with a line shown by her from the book and asked what it was.

It read: Deham Naham Koham Soham.

Bhagavan Sri Ramana called her near and read out the line and started explaining.

Deham Naham. "Amma! You are wearing the skirt.
Is it You?
You are wearing nice golden bangles.
Is it You?

The child said: No, they are not I.
They are only mine.

Bhagavan further said:

Amma ! Like these, even this body is not You.
It may be your for some time.

Then, Koham, Who am I?
Soham, I am Siva. Soham shivoham, I am the Heart!

The child was very seriously listening to Bhagavan Sri Ramana's words. She repeated the words and Bhagavan Ramana told her to remember this line always.

Viswanatha Swami, who was listening to all these curious exchanges between Indra and Bhagavan Ramana, asked Him: "What can she understand?"

Bhagavan Ramana replied Viswanatha Swami:
"Oh! Is is known only by understanding?
You have understood everything.
Have you known It?"

Viswanatha Swami kept mum.

On the day of leaving,
Indra said to Bhagavan Ramana :
"Thatha! I shall always say this and remember this.
Deham Naham, Koham, Soham."

Bhagavan Ramana said: "That is good, that is sufficient."

The girl and her father left for Andhra.
In two months, Indra took seriously ill and saying Deham Naham, Koham, Soham,
she left the body and
merged with Pure Space !

G.V.S. constructed a small samadhi for her at the backyard of his house.

Many cannot see Him Only some can see Him.

When G.V.S. informed about the demise of Indira and what he had done, Bhagavan Sri Ramana approved his step.

Papaji: The concept "I am a body" is a dream.

Questioner : This is very difficult to understand.

Papaji: No, it is not difficult. Every day your experience this. Every night, when you go to sleep you experience this. You leave your body and friends behind and fall asleep. At that moment, are you happy or unhappy? To leave everything behind – apartment, car, money, friends – and say, "Good night, I am going to sleep." You leave the body, the mind and the ego all behind. And where are you wanting to go and disappear from all the pleasures of life? Why do you want to hide yourself and be alone? It must be a happier place than this world, that's why you want to run away. To enjoy your Self, alone. No one likes suffering. You must be very happy in sleep, therefore, you turn your back on everything and go to sleep alone, don't you?.

find yourself

What is the root of pain?
Ignorance of yourself.

What is the root of desire?
The urge to find yourself.

All creation toils for its self and will not rest until it returns to it. You are really in search of yourself, without knowing it.
You are love, longing for the love-worthy, the perfectly lovable. Due to ignorance you are looking for it in the world of opposites and contradictions.
When you find it within, your search will be over.

illusion maya

Everything belongs to God. Everything is God. It is true that you appear to be using it, but never for a second believe that it belongs to you.
This is why,
when people realize this truth, it's so easy for them to share, but when one believes they are the body then they have to hoard, and hold onto something, and fight for their existence and stick up for their rights.

Is it any wonder that you don't wake up? How can you wake up when you're fighting for your rights as a human body, when you're trying to protect the things that you think you own?
This is maya, total maya, the belief that you
own something, that you are something. It's all an illusion.
There is only God.
There is only consciousness.
Everything else is an appearance.

Enjoy the world if you can, but do not allow the world to be your master. Do not allow the world to tell you how things are.
Do not allow the news, or the newspaper, or the way of the world to confound you and confuse you, and to make you sad, or angry, or upset you.
After all, it's the same as seeing a movie. You look at the movie and you see all kinds of dastardly things going on. But then you catch yourself and you say “It's only a movie. It's not the truth."
And so it is with life.

You observe everything that's going on in life. You watch, you look, you see, yet you
never react. You're never for or against. You understand and this makes you free.
What we call maya is very powerful and so it appears. It grabs you in its clutches and makes you believe that things are happening in this world, and makes you believe that things are moving, changing. That's the picture it shows you.

There are very few people who can go through a day without being affected by maya.
Think about yourself.
Just today. How have you been affected by maya, believing something about your body, or about somebody else, or about a situation in your life, or about the world, or about the universe, and feeling it?
That's maya.

Here's an example.
I've told this story before.

One day Buddha and his chief disciple, Narada, were walking along a country road. Buddha was discussing maya.
He explained that the trees, the river, the mountains, the beauty, all of the bugs and the mosquitoes, animals, it's all maya.

And Narada said
“But master, how can this be? It sounds virtually impossible. I can grab the tree. I can grab your arm. I'm stung by a mosquito. I feel this thing. There's a bump on my arm. How can this all be illusion? I don't
understand."

And Buddha said “I'm thirsty. Go get me a glass of water."

There was a town nearby so Narada went to the town and knocked at the door of the first house he saw.
An old lady opened the door.
She said “What do you want?"

Narada said “My master would like a glass of water."

She looked him over and saw that he was handsome, well built, healthy, and she said “Come on in.” He went into her house and there was a beautiful lady sitting on a chair. The woman said “This is my daughter. Isn't she beautiful?"
Narada was astounded at her beauty. He said “She is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen." The old lady said “How would you like to marry her?" and Narada said “Why not?"

So he married the girl. They had a big wedding and all the people in the village came. The next day he got a job. He was a potter by trade and he made beautiful pots out of clay. He did this for a living. After the first year they had a child and he was able to afford a beautiful house. He had a mortgage payment, had to pay taxes, so he had to work harder and hire people to help him. He had employees. He had to pay them salaries, take out taxes, workers
compensation, everything else.

Then, after two years passed, another child. He was completely enmeshed in family
life. Some days were good. Some days were bad. A couple more years went by, three years, four years, five years.

One day there was a big hurricane, a very powerful hurricane, that came into the town. The place was getting flooded.
Narada said “What are we going to do?" All his furniture was being ruined. Everything he believed he owned was getting wet, totally ruined. He took his family up onto the roof. There was a clothes line on the roof.
They all hung onto the clothes line. The hurricane became stronger, and stronger and stronger. His mother-in-law was washed away by the flood.
Narada said “I guess we didn't need her anyway. She was old."
But the hurricane was still very strong and his wife and two children were holding on. One of the children was washed away, and Narada became very distraught, but he was holding on with his wife. Then the other child was washed away. He became very upset, but he said to himself “At least I have my wife. We can have more children."
Then his wife was washed away and he said “What happened to my family?
They're all gone. Everything I worked
for is all gone. Everything I strived for is all gone. I'm going to end it all, commit suicide." So he let go of the rope.

The next moment he found himself sitting next to Buddha with a glass of water. He looked at Buddha and Buddha said
“It's about time you brought me my water." So Narada looked at him and said “Now I understand what maya is."

This is just like us.
We become so enmeshed in the world.
We think things are real.
Everything bothers us. We become angry. We become upset. But the truth is you are not maya.
You are absolute reality.
You are total awareness.
You are the self.
Know who you are and wake up.

~ Robert Adams.

Conversation between Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna

Conversation between Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna

1. Time is a Running Deer

Vivekananda Questions – I can’t find free time. Life has become hectic.
Ramakrishna Answers – Activity gets you busy. Productivity makes you free.

2. Life’s Complexity

Vivekananda Questions – Why has life become complicated now?
Ramakrishna Answers – Stop analyzing life, it gets complicated. Just live it.

3. Slipping Happiness

Vivekananda Questions – Why are we then constantly unhappy?
Ramakrishna Answers – Worrying has become your habit. That’s why you are not happy.

4. Good V/s Bad

Vivekananda Questions – Why do good people always suffer?
Ramakrishna Answers – Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don’t suffer. With that experience, their life becomes better, not bitter.

5. Importance of an Experience

Vivekananda Questions – You mean to say such experience is useful?
Ramakrishna Answers – Yes. In every term, Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons.

6. A Confused Path

Vivekananda Questions – Because of so many problems, we don’t know where we are heading…
Ramakrishna Answers – If you look outside you will not know where you are heading. Look inside. Eyes provide sight. The heart provides the way.

7. Pain of Failures

Vivekananda Questions – Does failure hurt?
Ramakrishna Answers – Success is a measure as decided by others. Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you.

8. Not-so-motivating instances

Vivekananda Questions – In tough times, how do you stay motivated?
Ramakrishna Answers – Always look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing.

9. Mindset of People

Vivekananda Questions – What surprises you about people?
Ramakrishna Answers – When they suffer they ask, “why me?” When they prosper, they never ask “Why me?”

10. Life Results

Vivekananda Questions – How can I get the best out of life?
Ramakrishna Answers – Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear.

11. Prayers Unanswered

Vivekananda Questions – One last question. Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.
Ramakrishna Answers – There are no unanswered prayers. Keep the faith and drop the fear. Life is a mystery to solve, not a problem to resolve. Trust me. Life is wonderful if you know how to live.

self

Of what avail is knowing things
Other than the Self?
And the Self being known,
What other thing is there to know?

That one light that shines as many selves,
Seeing this Self within
As Awareness’ lightning flash;
The play of Grace; the ego’s death;
The blossoming of bliss.

- Sri Ramana Maharshi

daily life

Questioner: How can I go through my devotional practices when I have always to think of my daily bread?

Sri Ramakrishna: He for whom you work will supply you with your necessaries. God made provisions for your support before He sent you into this world.

Never react

There is absolutely nothing on this earth that has anything to do with your spiritual life. All of your dreams, your earthly dreams, your desires, your needs and your wants are all nonsense. They seem important, but they're total nonsense. You're not going anywhere when you attach yourself to worldly things. You're just spinning around, getting nowhere.

It's difямБcult for most people to understand, that you can sit in a chair, and something will happen within you which will take care of all your needs, your wants. And everything that's going on in your life, will be taken care of in the right way. You think you have to be the doer. You think, you believe, you have to run around and make things happen. Nothing can be further from the truth than this. There is a power and a presence that will take care of everything for you.

Your job is to relax, to take it easy, to be peaceful. To observe, to watch, to look, never to react. As you begin to go deeper within yourself, whatever you need to know will be revealed to you. Whatever you have to do will be done. Yet what you really are has absolutely nothing to do with these things. Your true nature, Brahman, absolute intelligence, pure wisdom, sat-chit-ananda, is always available. It is always there. You are that.

To see your true Self, and to feel your true Self, and to be your true Self, you simply have to negate everything else in this world. By negate everything in this world, I mean you have to look at a situation and never react to it, and realize this is not you. Good things, bad things, whatever you call good and bad, they're all the same. They are not you. You are not that. You are absolute freedom.

Nothing

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they have to stand naked before God. By stand naked I mean, no scripture, no fancy words, no preconceived ideas, no spiritual intellectual knowledge but to be totally naked in humility and humbleness. Therefore when you can forget about your scripture, forget about everything you’ve learnt and then become totally empty you will then become full.

Jnana Marga

To follow Jnana Yoga in this age (Kali yuga) is very difficult.
First, a man's life depends entirely on food,
Second, he has a short span of life,
Third, he can by no means get rid of body-consciousness.

The Jnani says :
'I am Brahman ; I am not the body. I am beyond hunger and thirst, disease and grief, birth and death, pleasure and pain.'

How can you be a Jnani if you are conscious of disease, grief, pain, pleasure and the like ?
A thorn enters your flesh, blood flows from the wound, and you suffer very badly from the pain ; but nevertheless if you are Jnani you must be able to say :
'Why, there is no thorn in my flesh at all. Nothing is the matter with me.'

- Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna Dev.

Devotee.: A number of asanas are mentioned. Which of them is the best?

Maharshi: One-pointedness of mind is the best posture.

past

Never think much about the past. That which is gone, is gone; you cannot undo it. If you constantly think about it, you destroy your present and your future too, because that guilt will always be a barrier on love. Nothing can be done about it, so guilt is absurd.

What can you do? All that you can do is, please don’t repeat the same pattern again -that’s all.Whatsoever has happened had to happen. The situation was such that it had to happen; it was impossible to avoid it. If it were possible to avoid it, it would have been avoided.

This feeling of guilt is also part of the egoistic mind; it is nothing spiritual. Religions have been exploiting it, but it has nothing to do with spirituality. It simply says that you could have done otherwise. It is an ego feeling; as if you are not helpless, as if you were in control, as if it were your decision that you do this, as if it were in your hands not to do this and to do otherwise.

Nothing is in your hands. You yourself are not in your hands. Things are happening; nothing is being done. Once you understand this, guilt disappears. Sometimes you can cry and weep for something, but deep down you know it had to happen because you are helpless, a part of such a great totality - and you are such a tiny part. It is like when there is a leaf on a tree, and a strong wind comes and the leaf is separated from the tree. Now the leaf thinks a thousand and one things -that it could have been that way and not this way; that this separation could have been avoided. What can a leaf do? The wind was too strong.

The guilt goes on giving you the wrong notion that you are powerful, that you are capable of doing something. Guilt is the shadow of the ego: you could not change it, and now you are feeling guilty for it. If you look deep into it you will see that you were helpless, and the whole experience will help you become less egoistic.

If you go on watching the shape things take, and the forms that arise, and the happenings that happen, by and by you drop your ego. Love happens - separation too. In fact man cannot do anything. The very notion that we can do is wrong, and out of that wrong concept many more wrong concepts arise. So look at the base. And this I call a spiritual attitude - when you understand that nothing can be done; when  you understand that you are just a tiny part of such a tremendous vastness.such a tiny part of such a vast mechanism...

life of that

One day, Major Chadwick who had settled down at the Ashram and had never even thought of going back to England, called Sri K Natesan and requested him to show Sri Bhagavan a piece of paper, in which he had given a definition for Self-Realisation. Sri Bhagavan read it and appreciated it very much.

The slip of paper contained the words: "Self-realization: It is the death while yet alive of that which lives after death."

If the God is pleased, then the whole world is pleased."

The Three Vehicles of Self-Realization

The Three Vehicles of Self-Realization

After you learn the four principles, and they become a living embodiment within yourself, then you learn about the three vehicles, which carry you over the ocean of samsara, into the land of Self-realization of Noble Wisdom. That's why they're called vehicles. But you can only feel these vehicles when you've mastered the previous.

The first one is this: You have a deep feeling...now remember, this is before Self-realization, afterwards it doesn't matter what you do...you have a deep longing, a deep feeling, to be by yourself. Now, in the West they tell you this is antisocial behavior, but you have a feeling. In other words, you don't mentally say to yourself, "I want to be alone," like Greta Garbo. It's not a mental game you're playing. Because of your inquiry and your feeling and knowing the four principles, you have a feeling to be by yourself, so you are not pulled down by the world, to give you an opportunity to make the four principles and Self-inquiry work for you. So you enjoy being alone. You want to be by yourself. You look for times that you can be by yourself, so you can work on yourself, and that becomes a total joy for you. It's like total heaven to be by yourself, not all the time, but most of the time. It's only when you're by yourself that you can argue with yourself, and you can tell off your mind, and you can scream a little, if you like, and do what ever you have to do to get rid of the ego and the mind. That's the first vehicle.

The second vehicle is: You have a deep feeling, a deep desire, to always be at satsang. Now, satsang is not just a
spiritual meeting, as most of you know. It's not a gathering of people when they hear a lecture. Who can explain what satsang is? How about you, Narada? What is satsang to you?
Well, ultimately, I suppose it can't really be put into words, so to realize that. I understand what the essence of satsang is, that it can't be put into words. Satsang is like the embodiment of the teaching. So I think that there's a growth in satsang, that takes place, a growth that does not take place in the words. OK, that's a good explanation. Anybody else like to say what satsang is?
Abiding in the Self
Yes, exactly. Being together with people who abide in the Self; the realization that there is one Self, and you are That. So being in satsang is being at the feet of God. That's what it literally means. Sitting at the feet of God. And God is none other than your Self. So you want to be with your Self when you come together with us. And you're still alone. You're still by your Self. Because all the people with you are your Self.

Doesn't it usually involve the presence of a sage?

Yes. But remember, the sage, the guru, and God are your Self. It's all the same. What I mean by that is, I don't want you to look at me as being a sage, or being anything at all. When you see me, as I mentioned in the beginning, I am a mirror.
You see yourself. And when you see yourself as divinity, you will also see everyone else here as divinity. We're all one.
There's no difference

Number three: You will have a deep feeling, and a deep desire, to be around people like yourself. In other words your old relatives, your old friends, your old cronies that you used to drink with, and get high with, or whatever you did with them; they don't turn you on any more. You want to be with spiritual people like yourself. You're not putting it on.
You're not intellectualizing it. You're not imagining that you want to do that because I told you to. From your practice you become like that. It's an inner feeling, a deep inner feeling. Those are the three vehicles.

self

O noble soul, this is how you must pass your days: see the Atman (Self) everywhere, enjoy the bliss. Know that you are the Atman, ever blissful and find the ultimate peace. Remain absorbed in the joy which is silence in which the intellect ceases to occupy itself with the unreal.

- Sri Adi Shankaracharya (Vivekachudamani).

bondage

One who aspires for Self-Realization should drop the desire for sensual gratification. It is by craving sensual gratification that the Jiva is in a way, "hanged." Meditate only on God who is in your heart.

.

To have no liking for anything other than the Self is the sign of Self-attainment. Meditation on anything other than the Self, is bondage. Always meditate on the "Divine Nature" of your Self. All other things are unreal. Any other concentration except on the Self, who is the Lord, is bondage.

daily life

Questioner: How can I go through my devotional practices when I have always to think of my daily bread?

Sri Ramakrishna: He for whom you work will supply you with your necessaries. God made provisions for your support before He sent you into this world.

love

When you say to a woman or a man,
’I love you’ , you are simply saying,
’I cannot be deceived
by your body, I have seen you.
Your body may become old but
I have seen you, the bodiless you.
I have seen your innermost core,
the core that is divine.’

Liking is superficial.

Love penetrates and goes to the very core
of the person, touches the very soul
of the person.

No love is ordinary.
Love cannot be ordinary,
otherwise it is not love.
To call love ordinary is to misunderstand
the whole phenomenon of love.

Love is never ordinary;
love is always extraordinary,
always spiritual.

God

❓ Do you seek God? Then seek Him in man. His divinity is manifest more in man, than in any other object. Look around for a man, whose heart overflows with the love of God; a man, who lives, moves and has his being in God - a man intoxicated with His love. In such a man God manifests Himself.

agitation

Agitation of mind is the cause of desire, the sense of doership and personality. If that is stopped there is quiet.

Sri Ramana Maharshi

power

No thought has any power.
You have power.
And when you identify and
believe in the thought,
You give power to the thought.

japa

Q: Are our attempts sure to succeed?

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

Realization is our nature.
It is nothing new to be gained.

What is new cannot be eternal.
Therefore there is no need for doubting whether one could lose or gain the Self.

Q: Is it good to do japa when we know that enquiry into the Self is the real thing?

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

All methods are good since they will lead to the enquiry eventually.

Japa is our real nature.

When we realize the Self then japa goes on without effort.

What is the means at one stage becomes the goal at another.

When effortless constant japa goes on, it is realization.

love

Love is the most healing force in the world.

Nothing goes deeper than love:
it heals not only the body,
not only the mind,
 but also the soul.

If one can love, then all one`s wounds disappear.
Than one becomes whole - and to be whole is to be holy.
